The city’s first true urban winery and the city heart of the A.Retief wine label. Urban Winery Sydney is in The Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park and includes a full functioning open winery, a cellar door and wine bar, and an event space. I purchased a Virtual Wine Tasting pack with cheese/charcuterie platter for 2. There were 4 small pieces of cheese, all dried out, and the meats were also completely dried out - these items had to be thrown out. The wines were not very nice either. I emailed the business as soon as the items were delivered and received no response. Such a waste of time and money, do not purchase this experience.

My daughter and I visited for the wine tasting, the setup of the winery was great, Sam was very knowledgeable and the wines were amazing especially the Chardonnay which I normally would not consider. Highly recommended and will definitely go back again.

We had a great time at the Chef X Winemaker Long Lunch in June. Alex Retief ran us through the winemaking process and then we tried 7x wines from the A.Retief label alongside a four-course meal prepared by celeb chef Sian Redgrave.

We received gift vouchers for this experience. The setup is good with casks and vats on display. Alex explained the wine making process in layman’s terms. We all listened whilst drinking a glass of his wine. The highlight was of course stomping the grapes. And of course the bottle of wine each at the end.

Very disappointing. The wine was not bad (but in Sydney it’s not hard to find a nice drop). But nothing else was very pleasant.

Seating was not comfortable (no one likes being perched at a high bench with their back to the room in a chair with no back on it).

The room was freezing - I wore my coat the whole time.

The meat platter was the most disgusting charcuterie I’ve ever had. We were served a stale $1 bread roll with a whole salami cut in half with the wrapping still on it (not even sliced). Then given only one sub par knife to cut both the cheese (which was the only redeeming feature) and the meat. Both of my friends woke sick the next morning from the salami. This platter needed olives, eggplant, sun dried tomato, hummus - anything. But two slabs of cheap meat and three chunks of cheese with not enough crackers? It was just foul.

Service however, was warm and friendly. Servings were generous. But this was not enough of a redeeming feature to warrant a return.

I’d never return as there are better places at the quarter to eat and more comfortable places to drink. The entertainment quarter is in desperate need of a quirky comfy wine bar. Sadly, this missed the mark by a mile.

Dropped in here specifically to sample the "experimentals"... white wines where juice left with skin contact for extended period (like reds). Didnt realise there was a tasting option so just bought 4 glasses between 2 of us... pricey at $14 a pop but generous serves ... Have a history of trying these vino types over the years but usually with stoic french varietals like roussane, marsanne, pinot gris and viognier (or east european) so was surprised to see chardy and savblanc on offer ...expect cloudy (unfiltered), rich golden and alcoholic swirlings ... not sure they hold the depth of the other varietals in this method but would have been interested to meet and discuss with winemaker... also tried their mataro and museum (2008) red blend ..i found these reds better personally...there's other wines (not Urban winery's) from other regions for drinking by glass as well, so it is a true wine bar. Not a lot of seating choice and "background" music was a tad loud for conversation. Plenty of staff milling about and they were very good, friendly and efficient, without being overly intrusive, Top marks for service. Ambience is a little sterile but i understand they are trying to emulate the mood of a regional cellar door with a functioning winery next door. Probably return if found myself in this area as not a lot of alternate choices for a relaxed and chilled type drink, most other venues here are very commercial. Overall, cant really go wrong choosing here for a fine wine experience with quality nibbles ...

A group of us visited for the wine blending session, this was extremely enjoyable. The knowledge shared was extremely valuable. The tasting of their great wines is worth the visit, the added ability to listen and create your own blend is very enjoyable. Making a great blend and then being able to purchase your blend was a great touch! I highly recommend a visit and the wine blending session!

What do to after some Shakespeare at the pop up Globe theatre?

This was the perfect after-party. Very good wine by the glass (me the Gundagai Tempranillo, my gorgeous wife the Hilltops Petit Verdot) and a crackingly good cheese platter (maybe a little expensive, but good value nonetheless).

Sitting amongst the barrels, we could have been in Margaret River, the Hunter, the Barossa or Yarra Valley, but we were just a few minutes from the heart of the city.

Recommended.

The signage lured us in, seems like a great idea, a winery in the entertainment quarter but the execution was a bit lacking.

We were shown a list of the wines but not offered a tasting, so we went for a bottle of Pinot Gris as the per glass price was I think $12 and the bottle $40 and there were 3 of us. I think if you expect people to spend $40 a bottle they should be offered a tasting first, especially if you are calling yourself a winery.

The winery had some ambience with all the barrels but could do with some heating in the middle of winter, a nice fireplace would look great and be a focal point.

The wine was rather one dimensional and had a chemically taste which was not pleasant. There was no follow up from the guy at the bar to see how we were enjoying it, and possibly sell more wine. Some cheese platters or savoury snacks would be a good addition to the fare on offer.

In conclusion it wasn’t a bad start to our evening but we moved on after one drink.
