Passing through on way to Abergavenny, and accidentally discovered this interesting Castle. It's located close to a fairly fast flowing river, with various watersports, including canoeing and swimming. There's also a good pub close by with great food and lodging! Will visit again!

There isn't much castle left here - we visited as we were passing, but are glad that we hadn't driven miles out of our way to see this castle. It is atmospheric, but the day we were there, the over-riding impression was one of the inside of the castle needing the litter removing. There isn't much to see here, so... More

We were on a mission to visit the "Three Castles", but there isn't much castle here, just the round tower inside the ruins of curtain walls. However, it is free and one can roam around the area. A superb pub, The Bell at Skenfrith, is just a short walk away.

We drove past and turned around, glad we did! An atmospheric ruin laid out on several layers with substantial side walls and basement rooms. An excellent free spot for a picnic and sheltered from the wind inside the walls. Walk out of the 'water gate' and there is a river side to walk along and sit at. A small coffee... More

From pictures, Skenfrith Castle looked as if it was just a ruined tower but on the ground, there is so much more to see. Easy to park, very tranquil and in the midst of lovely countryside. Worth a detour if you are anywhere near but not a "destination" for a day's outing. A very short walk for refreshments at the... More

Skenfrith castle is great for clambering around and you don't have to pay. There's interesting information and you can see round swiftly as its small. The highlight is down through the watergate where the River Monnow runs right by the castle. There's a beautiful pool, probably a mill pond from the adjoining mill. It really does feel you've stepped back... More

It may be well out of the way but Skenfirth castle is a beautiful ruin, you can amble round, sit in the grounds or go and sit by the river. You can happily take a picnic and while away your time. And best of all, it's free.

Easy to find and parking not a problem. You can easily just visit for an hour or spend a few hours relaxing in the grounds. Free entry and at the weekends (in the Summer) there is a cafe open - well a local resident that opens their garage for tea/coffee, etc. Well worth a visit.

Stopped here for a couple of hours with our motorhome and enjoyed a peaceful walk round the castle, meadow and church. Plenty of room for the dog to play. Someone had obviously done a litterpick but unfortunately the bags had not been collected and had been scattered by animals. Just enjoying a cuppa when a family with 3 extremely loud... More

If you're in the area around Skenfrith, maybe visiting the better known castles like Raglan and Goodrich, take a bit of time to visit this little gem. It's a lovely castle in an idyllic location next to the River Monnow - and entry is free.
