About
The Heritage Museum of The Bahamas opened in July 2014, and is the foundation of Graycliff's new Heritage Village. Located in the historically preserved Mountbatten House on West Hill Street, the museum offers visitors an in depth look at the history and heritage of The Bahamas, ranging from the pre-historic times to today. The majority of the collection exhibited at the museum is owned by Hamilton White, a well-known British antiques collector. Mr. White's expansive collection greatly complements all that lies on historical West Hill Street, with relics and treasures spanning the centuries to include natural history and fossils, the days of Columbus, the piracy era, slavery and plantation life, the Maritimes of the 18th century, life in the out islands during the early 1900's, the days of the Duke of Windsor, the Royal Air Force, Bahamas Speed Weeks, and so much more.... The oldest of artefacts being a slice of a meteorite which is approximately 4.5 billion years old.

Don’t miss this gem! We had a blast at this museum but we also almost didn’t get in. This was due to poor planning on my end, scheduling a walking toor probably too late the day before to be filled on the receiving end. When we arrived, the museum was closed and we wandered around, knocking the door of the museum and not knowing what to do. It was so hot outside even for April. We asked a few folks who seemed to be locals and one of them offered to call someone who could come and open the museum, which they did. He also brought us cups of ice cream that made my teens go from cranky to happy and set us up with audio tours. I’m really glad we got the chance to visit the museum. It’s small but packed with interesting objects small and large, telling the history of the Bahamas. I found it fascinating and was so grateful that we got to experience it.

As of now (March 2024) this attraction is open only by appointment. We both emailed and called Greycliff for information about hours and access, and received no response.

$11 for a collection of Bahamian memorabilia from Columbus days to Colonialism to modern times all in a historic house that is said to be haunted. My only gripe was some rooms were stuffy but that’s all. If you have 30min to kill more if you like than it’s worth it. It’s nearby the national gallery and rum distillery.

I love ghost stories - and history; and unfortunately this tour was lacking both. The tour guide was unknowledgeable about either subject. She works for the Graycliff and said it’s over 500 years old - on the website and the book in the museum it clearly states 300 years and I discovered lots more about the property in a 15 second google search than from the guide. The tour felt random after the museum; going through abandoned parts of the property - ghost stories and hauntings were non existent even after probing. We walked aimlessly around the property and to the “oldest cemetery” but she didn’t say the name or any notable description but when we googled it “; it’s Western Cemetery and that’s were Sidney Poitier is buried. There is no tunnel to walk through but you can see the bricked entrance.

The description of the tour should be more specific about duration and how much walking and preparing (bringing water and proper shoes). This your could be shortened from nearly 2 hours to one but certainly needs more facts. It’s a tourist trap. Self guided google search recommended instead and much cheaper - it is a cool area to explore with history you can learn on your own. Don’t waste your money.

Thank you for partaking in the Bahamas Ghost Tour. We always aim for our guests to learn and have a good time. We are regrettably sorry that you did not enjoy our ghost tour. The Ghost meters that our guests are handed make us aware of when we have paranormal activities as we go through our tours. The tour historical facts have been fully researched thoroughly by our historian and the museum curator. If you may, we would like to find out more about your experiences so that we can make this right for you. Please Contact us at heritagemuseum [at] graycliff.com. Thank you once again.

Don’t waste your money. Mostly didn’t make sense in that we left the museum and went into the street and then back up the stairs of the museum and back down into the street again for no real reason at all.

An amateur historian's poorly collected menagerie of artifacts often places out of context. While of interest and worthy of a visit, this is another unfortunate example of collections that are not given the proper attention needed. Especially signified by the amount of dust collecting on some artifacts and cobwebs in corners. Exhibits we're not chronologically arranged but rathery by time they were collected. Resulting in odd exhibits and context and exhibits that have little relevance to each other or the island.

This was part of our tour of Nassau. It was a “revolving house” which means you go from room to room and then end up at the start of the house again. The tour guide was very informative and she spoke loud enough for the entire group. Here we learned about the history of the Bahamas and the Bahamian people. Very informative tour.

Interesting small museum filled with lots of historical artifacts. Definitely get the audio guide and plan for 45 minutes. Terrific overview of Bahamian history.

very cool artifacts, nice tour. The audio tour was a bust but the woman working did the tour herself which was great. A lot of history of the Bahamas I didn't know previously.

We stopped in to the Heritage Museum of the Bahamas on a recent cruise trip and were very glad that we did. The price was low for the wealth of information we received and I would gladly have paid more to help support them. The staff was knowledgeable
and friendly.
