Take a break from shopping or sight seeing and sit or stroll thru this nice historical little park.
In February when we were showing off Main Street to family visitors we made sure the park was a stop before getting back in the car.

The emancipation garden is beautiful but too many homeless people hang out here. It is in the heart of town and you can visit and sit on one of the benches but be prepared to get entertained

Due to two hurricanes, Matthew and Maria, my USVI vacation was postponed twice. Twice my plans were in effect, then abruptly Upon finally arriving I witnessed first hand what all the commotion was all about. Many of the hotels and B&Bs were not open and sustained water damage after the 15 hour non-stop water deluge experienced by the residents. At the waterfront locale near Palm Passage (connecting passage way between Main and Waterfront Streets) the government FEMA organization has set up shop and each day many residents fill the table and chairs of the room. The Salvation Army on Main St.is collecting clothing and donations from visitors and those fortunate locals not touched by Irma and Maria storms.
The town's popular attractions are intact and workers were busily stringing holiday decorations and wreaths on the white wicker gazebo in Emancipation garden. The decor seemed a bit out of place in mid 80 degree heat and humidity and heat of the sun. Right here too is located a brass bell that commemorates the landing of the Pilgrims in April 1607 who would in one months time be landing at Plymouth, May 13, 1607. Blue merchant tents sell souveniers and trinkets to visitors. Near the gazebo is one area that is sure to have the best WIFI connection on the island. In the small passage way that has a green metal bench, visitors can sit and hear the happy ping sound of live email and message texts coming through. The mother hens and their chicks also provide a nice earthly touch to the garden as they peck away at the grass seedlings.A few steps away is the mighty red building of Ft. Christian and its clock tower., built during Denmark's reign.
The yellow stucco building near the gazebo is the Us post office that has the best air conditioning anywhere! Come in and be chilled. Other attractions near here are the 99 steps which lead to a watch tower castle and the start of Main St.and Waterfront St and the jewelry stores that cater to the tourists and cruise ship day trippers.
Places to explore are: Dutch reformation Church on Nye and Kristael Sts, ,the Hebrew synagogue, the second oldest in the new world up the street and Sts Peter and Paul Cathedral on Main St. On the corner of Nye and Kristael sts is a brown brick building of a local artist who will gladly show his creations and give a lively history of the town. Beaches include, Emerald, Lindburgh bay, Brewers.
Two places that should not be omitted are University of USVI and Mountain Top and the view from there.

Small park commemorating the 1848 proclamation that freed the slaves. A reproduction of Philadelphia's Liberty Bell occupies a corner of the grounds. There are large shade trees, park benches, and a gazebo which make the park an ideal spot to take a rest. Hence, homeless folk and chickens flock to this park. They were harmless during my visit but I wouldn't come after dark.

We had not heard about this Garden until we found it by accident while walking around the waterfront area. The statue and plaque were well done but the park needed a good cleaning. Nice to see though.

Lots of chickens, chicks, and roosters, which were fun to watch. The benches and shade from trees made it very relaxing.

The slaves in St. Thomas were emancipated before the U.S. Civil War by almost 20 years. Clearly this is a major historic place. Small and easy to find across from the Post Office. A good item to check out for history buffs doing a Charlotte Amalie walking tour.
