Grand Turk is such a great island for vacation. Different from visiting European cities, we came here for relaxation and for fun. We could drive around the whole island for couple hours but I was here for three times with different cruise lines. First, I spent half day on a beach. On the second visit, I joined an excursion with tram. The third time, I took a taxi (van) going to the Cockburn Town for photos and videos.

We picked up one of the local Taxis / Vans at or just outside the gates and he offered a tour of the Island for 15$ US per head for 3 of us. It covered all round the Island for one and three quarter hours and was superb. The driver had micropone round his neck and delivered a grat narration through the tour.
Started at the airport when he spoke of John Glens landing in the sea offshore here and he was brought back but needed to wait until Lynden Johnson the Vice President came out to take him back to the states. We got photos of the capsule mounted at the gate of the airport. The size is amazing and shows the huge courage of John Glenn. The runway was built by US Airforce, a great legacy for Grand Turk.
Then down the coast road to see many of the houses some derelict by hurricanes and stopped at the area where her majestys prison amd the shelf just offshore that drops to 7,000 feet.Had a drink here at this stop. Moving on had great stories of the Maternity home where the midwife delivered many hubdreds of babies. The last when she was 105.
We then down past new school and hospital and also saw the salt pits and on to the lighthouse which had a good stories of it's past. Donkeys roam free on the island and we stopped to see them.
A great tour well narrated and great value for money on the later afternoon before we returned to the cruise complex for a browse round the shops.
This really made our day in Grand Turk.

Visited Grand Turk while on a cruise and wanted to check out the island including the town. Getting to Cockburn town can be tricky if you take a wrong turn, which we did, but eventually found our way to it. Cockburn town is basically a street that runs along the ocean, it has the museum, the historic prison, a few small shops selling island wears, a few restaurants and several other small businesses. Towards the end of the street is a great little beach side shack we found called "Johns" bar that has fried to order fish and conch and serves ice cold beer! We were surprised by how poor and undeveloped the island was. The beaches were pristine and gorgeous nearly picture perfect.

I have to say I'm genuinely surprised by some of the negative comments I read that others left regarding this island. I read them and am shocked how lazy Americans have become expect to be wowed and entertained without leaving their barcalounger. The fun and amazement is there but you have to get off your butt to go find it. The most wonderful thing about the island is meeting the local people. They are all so nice and very interesting to talk to. The beaches and water are also amazing.
This little island was my most favorite of all the ones I visited on my cruise I'm a "color outside of the lines" kind of guy as is my fiance so we didn't do any of the cruiseline tours. I tend to do my own thing and people tend to follow me because I have more fun as a result. We rented a scooter from Omar which has to wait outside of the terminal gate. Cars and Scooter rentals are all privately operated. The Taxi people directed us to Omar. He gave us a great scooter and a great price. Thanks Omar! We covered all the excursions on our own and then some. We made a wrong turn heading to the light house to visit the donkeys and went through flooded areas to where they rent kayaks. It was a blast, then we made our way back to the light house so we could pet the tame donkeys at the light house. The ones in the other areas aren't so tame. We were warned to avoid those.
After that, we rode down to the beach where the horse excursions are and my sweetheart walked on the beach and found a conch shell as big as her head.
Finally we made it back to Cockburn to walk around. I found a hole in the wall beverage store, and bought some "Turk Head Beer". Man was that good! I smuggled 6 back on the ship. HeHe. While we were cooling off, a retired Episcopal Priest approached us to visit. He was such a lovely man, we talked and asked him question for a long time. He started the first church on the island. He also had many other stories as well. I want to visit with him again.
All the people we met were so nice and wonderful. The locals are what makes that island special. I plan to go back and spend more time meeting people and exploring the island.
We finally left Cockburn and headed to Jack's Shack for our free shot of rum, had a great lunch and enjoyed the beach till it was time to reboard the ship.
Look past the shallow reviews of the people who want to be entertained with no effort and realize this is a beautiful island with beautiful beaches and ocean but the most interesting part is the laid back lifestyle of the locals and their interesting stories. I felt totally safe and welcome on this island. I'll make it back there someday soon!

Once you get off your Cruise ship make a hard left onto the beach and walk along it just a couple minutes to Jack's Shack for a relaxing bite to eat, great grill food, and new friends. Free wireless internet, too!

Having traveled to most regions of the world and in the last ten years travelling six to eight months a year We decided to spend six nights 0n gran Turk and it has to noted that the island is absolutely filthy with rubbish strew everywhere add to that ,that prices as per all of Turks and Caicos are exorbitantly high and the islanders are only slightly less rude than those on provincialis, plus the beaches are very average by Caribbean standards and yet again rubbish is strewn everywhere . In short a thoroughly awful island and we can’t wait to leave tomorrow morning .

This place was far from the docks, other side of the island, we rented a moped and drove as adventure, nothing to see there just the light house, some small souvenir shop and some wild donkeys trying to kick you, spend time on the beach its better.

We visited Grand Turk on a Caribbean cruise. This is a small island, but very interesting, and we have stopped there twice. We visited the old church, the lighthouse, the beach, some of residential area, the salt ponds and museum, and the shops. We especially enjoyed visiting the maritime museum. They have recovered a ship wreck off the island that could be one of Christopher Columbus' ships, but it is probably not. They also make much of the recovery of John Glen splashing down near here from one of the space missions. It was a delightful visit. The only problem is that if you saw it all on the first trip, there is really nothing new to come back for. We did enjoy our visit. The second time we were there we enjoyed looking through the shops and visiting the very nice beach right by the pier where you disembark.

We bypassed the cruise terminal and took a shared taxi $6pp with useful local commentary. The Museum was worthwhile and our stroll along the shoreline and Duke Street was really beautiful. The Secret Garden at the Salt Raker Inn was open for an early lunch. A peaceful, charming spot. Very hospitable. We enjoyed delicious fish fritters and local beer. It was quite a distance back to our ship and it was a hot day, so we took a taxi. A very nice shore excursion.

How do you get from the main islands out to Cockburn Town. Is there a ferry or by boat??
Written 31 August 2017
How do you get here from the US? Which airport do you fly to? I imagine there will be a domestic fight to too??
Written 24 December 2016
From the US you will fly into the capital of turks and caicos which is Providence then you can get domestic flights to Grand Turk. there is not direct flight there you will have to get a stop over in the capital.

Were you able to just walk from the cruise ship to 'downtown'. I'll be going in January but would like to get away from the cruise ship mobs and get into some shops and a bar for local items and flavor.
Written 6 September 2016
Hello Lori. Good question. No - if you wish to get "downtown" it is too far to walk. You will need to take a short taxi ride - easy to do. Frankly, Cockburn Town is more of a "village" and very little is there. If you are budgeting for various shore excursions on your cruise, you may be better off saving your funds for excursions on some of the other island visits. But Grand Turk is a fun place. Very clean and nice shops, etc. right at the pier. Margaritaville and some fine shops. Quite safe. Hundreds of free beach lounge chairs, many shaded by palm trees. Beautiful clear water at the beach almost in the shadow of the cruise ship. On past the lounge chairs, up the beach (short walk) is Jack's Shack. A funky little place. BBQ and bar. Beach volleyball. The local Turk's Head Lager is a really good beer. Free wi-fi here. If I were to visit Grand Turk again, I would spend my time right here near the ship. No need to go elsewhere. We visited in November 2016. A fun stop at this sleepy little island.
