Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake Railway) offers a delightful 9 mile return journey alongside Bala Lake, through the beautiful Snowdonia National Park. Our 2ft narrow gauge steam trains give excellent views of the lake amid its surrounding pastoral and woodland scenery, and of the nearby mountains, Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy.The railway provides an ideal centrepiece for a day’s visit to Bala Lake. The round trip of 1 hour can be broken at any of the stations to enjoy other activities - a pleasant 10 minutes walk into Bala town for shopping or merely browsing. There is access to the lake shore at Llangower station for swimming, fishing or simply lazing by the waterside.

Lovely trip along the lake
We visited as a family with small children, my son loves trains so this was perfect for him. We visited on a dry sunny day and it was perfect to take in the views of the lake and mountains.

Covid secure trip along the lake
Easy online booking. Covid instructions very clear. The engine drivers/volunteers are very informative and obviously love their hobby. We were fortunate with the weather and sat in an open carriage, but did get some airborne debris from the engine on our clothing. If you like your (seat) comfort sit in an inside carriage. Beautiful views of Lake Bala.…

Good customer service
Due to unforeseen circumstances, we were unable to use our tickets for the Bala Lake Railway. Customer services were extremely helpful and understanding; they refunded our expenses in full. Hope to visit in the near future.

Wonderful experience
We had heard a lot about the Bala steam train so pre booked a return journey when we were in the area. We are so glad we did! From the moment we arrived everyone was so friendly and we really enjoyed wandering around the heritage centre while we waited. It is really well laid out and very informative. The journey itself lasts about 25 minutes each way and it is a wonderful way to see the entire length of the lake. The ride was comfortable and Covid safe with screens between the carriages. We will certainly go on this train again if we return to the area. …

Quaint little railway
Walked to the far end of Bala lake and then got the train back, at the moment be aware there is a minimum charge of £20. Wound its clanking way up the side of the lake and didnt last long enough. All really helpful volunteers so they do really well. Ensure you book your tickets on line beforehand.…
