We sailed with Joe and Mandy Feb 23 to Mar 1 2020 on the KUMA TOO. It was a fabulous experience that far exceeded our expectations. Our trip began with contacting BVI Yacht Charters, to whom we were referred by our daughter who knew them from working on charter boats out of Key West. Els accommodated our plans well and we were drawn to the description of the KUMA TOO catamaran.
Joe and Mandy run a tight ship, white glove clean and maintained, recently refitted including new beds. It is obvious they have pride of ownership and work very hard to make sure guests have the best experience possible. We loved the boat design and felt completely safe and at ease with Joe and Mandy at the helm.
We couldn't have asked for more attentive hosts, always at our elbow asking if we need another beverage/snack or would we like to do/see something, all without being intrusive. We can't say enough about the food; they served gourmet meals from scratch all day long, while somehow finding time to tend to boat tasks and entertain us as well. We were always surprised when we turned in for the evening to find our bed turned down and mood lights flickering by the head of the bed. How did they find the time to do that?
It worked well to let them take us to the best places along our path pending weather and seas; we are glad we didn't impose a predetermined itinerary on them and were rewarded for it.
There was plenty of room for 3 couples to have private cabins/toilets/showers and not feel crowded. We loved the trampoline on the front of the boat and the sheltered seating in the cockpit area and inside by the kitchen. Joe was always welcoming anyone who was a bit queasy on the waves to join him in the double captain's chair to feel better.
We highly recommend this crew and boat, and hope to be back for a repeat in the future.

Can't say enough about this firm and their staff. When Covid cancelled our trip 2 years ago BVIYC honored our commitment and allowed us to reschedule with no penalty. Through the long dark Covid months they sent and published guidance on how to get in to BVI and back home.
Our boat was in great condition. All you could see was clean and worked. The engine rooms you don't see looked like operating rooms.
Because our skills were a little rusty we included a teaching captain for the first three days of the trip. Maurizio was great and put us through our sail handling and tacking paces during three days of brisk winds. After he left us we felt very confident handling our Lucia 40 Catamaran "Slow Poke" (Not!). That included our first trip our to Anegada in 12 to 15 kt winds.
Strongly suggest signing up for the three reserve ahead mooring ball services: Boaty Ball, Dockwa, & BVI Ball. Need to be ready at 7 am sharp because moorings at popular spots are gone within 90 seconds. Paying the surcharge was well worth it to us so that we could sail to our next overnight location at our leisure secure in the knowledge that we had a mooring for that night ( left more time for Maurizio to hone our skills).
The BVI Base is new and shows it. Their marina and fuel dock setups are a bit of a challenge however once at the inner buoy we VHF'd base and they sent an experienced helmsman to bring us the rest of the way in...a huge weight off our shoulders.

I began bareboating in Tortola with my parents 45 years ago. If you are going to bareboat in the BVI for the first time I assure you that you'll be back. For me and my family, it's the perfect vacation. Once you charter with BVI Yacht Charters you will never charter from anyone else. I have now chartered with BVI Yacht Charters on four occasions and they are the BEST! The boats are in pristine condition. You will wonder if you are the first to set sail on the boat you select. The staff is as helpful as if you owned the company. When you arrive you are greeted with warm smiles and everyone is ready to be helpful. I am amazed when the dock crew recognizes me from previous charters and welcomes me back. They are a significant size operation allowing them to meet every requirement you may have of a charter company but thankfully not the biggest operation so you won't need to take a number and stand in line for anything. If something malfunctions their support crew can often talk you through how to fix it on the radio or they will be there as fast as possible to make the repair. I only ask that you don't tell too many people how fantastic BVIYC is as we don't want them to be so heavily booked that we can't reserve the charter dates we want in the future.

Spent a week on Tennesse Waltz (Saba 50) with 5 empty-nester couples on a long overdue vacation. We arrived late Friday afternoon and were met as promised outside the airport by one of Big Mike's cab drivers that had been arranged by Abbie and Cassie. Got to the marina for a first night sleep aboard and found the boat ready to go and in immaculate condition - pleasantly surprised for a 5 year old charter yacht. After the chart briefing with Cassie and our boat briefing Saturday morning with Ferdie (who was patient and thorough) we headed out for a week of island hopping. Everything went flawlessly. We had a reserved mooring ball waiting for us almost every night thanks to Boaty Ball (highly recommended this time of year), spent two nights at Anegada with a fantastic sail in both directions. Dined like royalty every day thanks to Fiona at Captain's Kitchen (also highly recommended). Reluctantly returned the following Saturday and were met by the very helpful dockhands to get us tied up to the dock. Quick checkout with no problems found or reported. All in all a fantastic experience and will not hesitate to use BVIYC for our next trip to paradise.

11 day sail.
Took a special cab from the airport to our 40 ft. Catamaran (Dare Greatly) where we settled onto this very comfortable Catamaran (Two couples on a four cabin craft.
WOW this AIR CONDITIONED craft is a true winner. The Dare Greatly is almost brand new (built in 2020), at a cost of about $800,000, with two large berths (bedrooms) in each hull, with two additional smaller bedrooms that we sort of use for all our bags “stuff” (we just considered those room as a walk in closet). There are all sorts of roomy storage in all four cabins. Each hull has a bathroom with shower. For comparison you might compare the living space is at about the size of a nice compact condo (or one SUPER big trailer).
All our food orders were on board and we did a complete inventory. Only found a couple of items missing (including the beer) and the supermarket showed up an hour later to fill what was missing.
BVI charters were very helpful in getting us going and supporting our needs!

There is no better place in the world than the BVI and no better way to see the BVI than chartering a boat from BVI Yacht Charters. This was my second charter with BVI Yacht Charters and 4th bareboat charter in the BVI. After chartering boats from a few other companies, I realized if you want really nice boats at good rates then BVI Yacht Charters is the place to go. The boats are well maintained and properly equipped to provide a smooth chartering experience. The Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 named Long Story that we chartered exceeded all expectations - we found the accommodations to be luxurious and the rigging setup easy to sail. The BVI Yacht Charters office staff provides a concierge level of service, both Kimmy and Kelly made the booking, planning, and chartering experience easy to navigate. I would strongly recommend chartering with BVI Yacht Charters.

We just got back from sailing around the BVI for the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Thanks to COVID, there were some hiccups in our flight plans, but BVI Yacht Charters helped up navigate the issues and get them worked out. Once we were there, they made it super simple. They helped us get the boat provisioned, and even contacted a local restaurant for us to have some food delivered to the boat. Throughout our charter, they were always available to answer questions and help with the COVID testing procedures. When I left my phone in Anegada, they arranged to have it brought back to their office and it was waiting when we got back to the dock. This was our third time using BVIYC and as always, Cassie, Abbie, Kimmy, Anthony, and all the guys on the dock, were just amazing to work with. This was our 4th boat with them and just like the other 3 it was immaculate. We arrived late in the evening and they had the AC and lights on waiting for us. They had a video waiting for us that showed us how to use the systems. The boat was very clean, and in wonderful condition. If you are looking for a monohull with a generator and AC, I highly recommend Bella. She was lovely to sail and really comfortable.
On a side note, now is the time to see the BVI. There are so few tourists right now. We had Cooper, the Indians, and the Treasure Caves to ourselves, shared the Baths with only one other boat, and at one point, we were the only boat visible in the Sir Francis Drake channel. The lack of tourists has given the corals and wildlife time to recover a bit and it really showed. We felt so lucky to experience the BVI's that way. Even in the low season, there are way more boats than there are right now.

We are just back from a 7 day bareboat charter on Indian Chief, a 2019 Jeanneau 419. The boat was delivered absolutely clean, on-time, and with a great crew to do the checkout. The front office staff were professional and responsive from the first emails to book the boat through the final signoff. Anthony, the head mechanic and guru, was incredibly responsible for a minor issue (they actually ferried out to us a power cord replacement for the Wi-Fi). There were no mechanical issues during our sail (delightfully unusual for a sail, right?!). And of course the BVI are simply paradise on earth, great week of sailing, weather, swimming, snorkeling, and dining. I'm glad to see the BVI recovering from Irma, although the locals have many difficult memories to recount. No question that the next time we return to the BVI, we will use BVI Yacht Charters.

Our family of five from San Diego chartered a 52’ monohull sailboat from BVI Yacht Charters for 5-nights in June 2024 for our son’s 30th birthday. The whole office staff was very helpful and answered my many emails in a timely manner. The “Fat Bottom Girl” Dufour sailboat was crewed by Captain Chris and he really made it a great trip for us. Our captain was a local and an experienced sailor and we had the time of our lives with the itinerary he put together. We sailed around Cooper Island, Virgin Gordo, Anegada, Jost Van Dyte and Norman Island. We really enjoyed the crystal clear 84-degree waters and fabulous white sand beaches.I would highly recommend BVI Yacht Charters for an amazing adventure!

Bareboat charter of one of their new monohulls, the Indian Chief. The boat was very well presented, almost like new. The welcome pack contained everything, chart, guide book, torch, tools, mobile phone etc.
The briefing was good, the personal check out and back in, the help answering our questions.
BVI Yacht Charters are a very well organised firm and it was a pleasure to see the BVIs on such a good boat.

How does it work with the NON All Inclusive option? Does it worth it? Do we have to cook the whole time or sandwiches are enough for captain?
Is there an option to buy food and someone else cooks, if we hire them? Thanks!

Bobby's Supermarket in Tortola has an on-line order form. Their prices are surprisingly reasonable. You can place your order for groceries and they will deliver it right to your yacht - including alcohol! The BVI's all have lovely restaurants - some a bit pricey but definitely worth it. Soggy Dollar, Hog Heaven, Haris's at Little Harbor, and the restaurants at Marriott Resort on Scrub Island are fabulous. So, essentially - no, you don't need an on-board chef and you don't have to be stuck in the kitchen. I recommend sandwiches during the day and restaurants at night.

Sorry, how exactly did you pay without having to pay the extra 3% for paying with a credit card? We aren’t really sure how to pay ACH or wire... any suggestions? Thanks bunches

Get a credit card that dosent charge for Overseas charges. Bank Of America Travel Rewards card does not for instance.

Where did you provision? Is there only one place to provision or other placed during stops. Was it difficult to get mooring balls?
Written 23 January 2020
Certainly, Road Town and Nanny Cay, Tortola, have provisioning centers that are more than adequate. On Virgin Gorda, Spanish Town has three markets -- no one of which had everything. There's several small stores on Jost van Dyke and also at Soper's Hole. That said, more retail opens throughout BVI with the passing of time as hurricane damage is remediated. I never had concerns about topping off supplies on our ten-day trip. Our next-port arrival time was generally by early afternoon. We easily found mooring balls at Norman and Cooper islands and Biras Creek, North Sound, Virgin Gorda. We elected to anchor at Peter Island. At Jost Van Dyke, we did not find an empty ball and anchored quite happily just outside of the mooring field. At Spanish Town, we docked at Yacht Harbour as we wanted walking access to town restaurants and stores.

Perhaps you said this, but did you have a bareboat or a crew. Was it a power or sailboat? Was it a catamaran? I have so many questions, but will just start here.

Bareboat mono and sailed short handed with the help of the auto pilot. Also did not jibe. We did chicken jibes instead

WiFi availability and cost on charter ?

For 9 days we paid about $165. Only has issues while at great harbor in jost. But it warns you about that service area prior to purchase

Hello Scott,
A few of us are renting a catamaran through BVI Yacht Charters with a captain. Did you have a captain as well? Wondering what is the appropriate amount to tip and meals.
Thank you!

Hi Scott,
An appropriate gratuity would be 15% of the charter fee. You should provide all meals for your captain. So provision for 1 extra person. If you dine ashore you can take the captain with you and pay for their meals or you can let them know what they can eat on the boat.
Hope that helps. Cassie. BVI YC

I am getting ready for my week yacht charter but I have some questions.
1. Tipping? What is a suitable amount to tip? Is tipping required?
2. Are we required to provide food / meals for our captain for the week?
3. I'm assuming the catamaran has all the kitchen necessities (spoons, forks, pots, and pans) needed for the week. Is that correct?
4. Has anyone ever brought their own food from the states for their trip?
Thank you!
Patrick
Written 10 July 2017
Hi,
Tipping is highly recommended especially if the captain is attentive to your needs. The boat will have most if not all utensils etc. the captain or charter should tell you if they are providing food?
