Neat historical site with amazing views
This was a cool stop with great views! Our son spotted the fort on the top of the hill as we were driving through Marigot. It took us a bit to find the right road to get to it, then you park (free parking and entry) and hike up a steep set of stairs to get to the fort, for an amazing view. Great pano opportunity, and we also spotted some huge iguanas. There are no barriers/fences/signs to keep you away from drop offs so watch small kids.

A little hike up stairs but worth the view.
We parked in a parking lot at base of buildings, what we thought was parking for Fort. Don't make that mistake....keep driving till you get to base of actual Fort. It was a pretty good hike just to that lot. Then once there you climb up a pretty good amount of stairs to get to actual site. But good exercise! That said, Fort is interesting. Seeing the canons, rifle ports to protect Fort itself. Pretty cool. The view is amazing.

Historic site with an excellent view
Excellent little hike with stellar views for a family. The site does not have safety features like in the US (eg railings over sharp drops) so be careful with young children. Beautiful elevated view of the city and Harbour with some history packed in.

    Very worthwhile experience
I climbed to the top of Fort Louis in Marigot in March 2024. I began the climb up multicolor steps near the shopping mall. I reached a midway level with a parking lot and passed a shrine to Jesus on the cross. I finished the climb which was another ten minutes of steps. At the top was a cannon looking out on Marigot and Marigot harbor with a beautiful panoramic view. I did not climb further up to the ruins of the fort with the French flag. Visiting Fort Louis was a worthwhile experience.

    Fantastic Views!!!
Climbing up to Fort Louis affords spectacular views out to sea. It is a bit of a climb, but not too difficult if you are reasonably fit and mobile. We accessed the steps from the open market, and if you take your time to climb up to the top, the views will not disappoint you. We even saw two iguanas happily sunning themselves on the Fort's ruins!

    A really nice island
We took a local bus from Philipsburg (Dutch side, where our ship had berthed) to Marigot on the French side. Not a lot of the fort left but still worth the visit, and a better view of the area. After that we stopped at a lovely bakery and the local market and then one of the restaurants. Can't remember the names of the eateries now! But, all very civilised and good value. On the way back to the ship we found the duty free prices, along the seafront at Philipsburg, to be really good value.

Fort Louis is an amazing fortress in the French Capital of Marigot. I had just returned from a trip to Anguilla when I looked up at this towering bluff waving the French flag. I just had to get to top, and it did not disappoint! The view up here is totally amazing! Panoramic is the best word to describe it. The fort is free of charge, and you can spend as much time here as you like. There is a stair to climb so keep that in mind. Hiking up to the French flag and getting a picture is simply the best fort experience you could ask for. All I could think about was all the memories this fort must have thru all the years. If it could only talk. A must see when you are in Marigot St. Martin. Exhilarating!

If you walk up all the stairs from the marina, you can easily see where the road is that ends at the parking lot. Then there are more stairs but mostly with a handrail. You get a sense of accomplishment once at the top.
Great views in many directions plus historical information.

You can either walk from the Marigot market or drive up most of the mountain to the main parking lot. There then is a bunch of steep steps up to the fortress.

I really enjoyed this fortress. Fort Louis was built in the 18th century to honour King Louis XVI of France. Originally built to defend Marigot which produced rum, sugarcane, coffee, and salt for export. In the 1800s the fort was no longer in use. Then it was restored and used once again. How it is in ruins.

It was a nice walk up most of the cement stairs has a hand railing. It did have very uneven grounds at the top. It has amazing views over Marigot and Simpson Bay. If you are good on your feet head up to where the flag pole is for even better views and pictures.

Suggest using google maps to find the fort, there are not any markings or street signs to direct you there. Asked a local who gave us turn-by-turn instructions from the main causeway. Great views of the bay, the remnants of the fort, and a few camera-friendly iguanas!
