La savane is a park in Fort de France located in the central part of the city. The day we were there, there was a half marathon race. Near the arrival, there were many people, a musical band, food stands and families enjoying the good weather. Overall a nice place to spend some time and relax. It is close to the fort and the water's edge.

It is important to know that here is where you can get tickets for tour of the fort in town. The Tourism kiosk is right at the corner of the park near the main road. They may be closed certain time when the staff takes people on tour. There are public toilets in the back across from the library. I would just use the ones inside the library instead. This is a huge park with the statue of Josephine and also another monument. Some shady benches along the park.

Visited the park as part of a walking tour of Fort de France. Highly recommend a tour guide or a solid French language skill. Our tour guide was very friendly, spoke English beautifully and explained a number of things i felt i'd have known had i studied history, france, or napolean but didn't.

I would have liked to know more about some features of the park, including some walls that look like they were once part of Fort St. Louis (across the street) and the founder statue, but we picked up some folklore that i'm sure wasn't in any of the park materials.

Just across the street from the park is a tiny beach, it was quiet and well shaded.

It was a great place to visit.

We visited Fort de France on a Sunday, so there was little open and not much to see and do around the town. We had a wonder around town to soak up the French Caribbean atmosphere and wondered around La Sanane which was fine – slightly down at heel and quite a lot of litter.

Little wonder her head was removed after all the injustices suffered by those during (and still, after) the traumas of slavery. Perhaps it's best she's left headless. The park itself is un-inspiring but seems a good spot to watch the locals doing their thing.

We stopped in Fort de France during a Holiday Cruise. I visited here back in the 1970's and found it to have deteriorated somewhat. Martinique's history began in 1502 when Christopher Columbus landed on the island. The French claimed it in 1635 but for the next 180 years, ownership bounced between France and Britain before the former took hold for good in 1815.Along with St. Martin, Guadeloupe and St. Barts, the four islands are collectively known as the French West Indies and became part of the French Overseas Territories in 1974.

Just a short walk from where our ship docked, the park is a miniature version of New York's Central Park. It features nicely manicured grounds and is know for it's statue of Napoleon's Empress Josephine, born on the island in 1763 and Martinique's most famous native. She is both revered for her fame and reviled for her part in propagating the slave trade. Be forewarned that the statue of Josephine was beheaded in 1991 by angry locals who were protesting her pro-slavery stance. It has not been restored and often has red paint sprayed where her head was severed from its neck.

One of the more interesting sights in Fort-de-France is the statue of Josephine in the park. She's headless (and will probably remain so) and has been vandalized, but this is perhaps not surprising given her relationship with Martinique. There are several small places to eat here for a very reasonable price, especially in the evenings.

La Savane is a twelve and a half acre sized, regular rectangular shaped park located on Fort de France bay between the town and Fort St Louis. It also overlooks a very small beach which if you are in the town have a look. Saves you going miles ( though it's not the best beach by a long shot ). The park though is an unfenced large open area which has historically been the location for plant and vegetation experiments, and is really a great place to wander through and relax. It houses some of Fort de France's most famous and well known statues and monuments, from the Belain d'Esnambuc statue and the Monument to the Fallen, through to the headless statue ( and there's a great story behind the headless part ) of Empress Josephine, of Napoleon fame. After a long day seeing the town and even further a field as we did, it's nice to relax and spend a bit of time here, and you'll probably be able to keep an eye on your ship if you arrived via a cruise as we did. Really good park.
