Corroborating the reviewer below me, the Refuge (therefore all its beaches) do close at 4pm as of mid-Feb, and the eastern beaches like La Chiva were closed entirely. But what is open is certainly worth visiting! The photos below are from Caracas Beach in mid-Feb.

Currently (as of Feb 18) the refuge closes at 4pm every day. It used to be sunset, but now at 4 they will lock up the gates. Don't be caught inside after 4, you get fined. Caracas (the first beach) & Plata Prieta are easily...More

We visited the Blue beach and the Caracas beach, with the former being the best of all beaches that we visited in Puerto Rico (including Flamenco). We also visited the run-down Puerto Ferro lighthouse, which had awesome views and a secret beach if you take...More

This is a beautiful tranquil spot. You have to do a little hiking to check out the different areas. It is worth a look

We visited several of the beaches, such as the Blue beach, La Plata and Pata Prieta. All were great with clear waters and great snorkeling. Most of the coral reefs were easily accessed from the beach which made it easy even for the kids to...More

Variety of beaches, each a bit different. Mangroves were interesting too. Mongoose, who knew? Having a Jeep was helpful for the road conditions.

I saw wild horses, but they're a dime a dozen in Vieques. The real treat here are the beaches. This is the Caribbean alright; white beaches, crystral-clear, warm, aqua-green water, palm trees, little coves to make out in, rocks, fish – everything. Every beach is...More

In Vieques the animals are everywhere and plentiful but, no where more than the refuge. Look for lizards and iguana's plus wild horses and roosters.
