Paradise Found!

Beautiful place to visit and explore. If you suffer from motion or high sea level sickness don't travel all the way to the top of forest. Winding roads and very high mountains so better to let somebody who knows the area drive.

Mountains that Create a Rainforest

While the Luquillo Mountains are not the highest mountains in Puerto Rico and only rise to the relatively modest height of about 3,525 feet (1,075m), they are the eastern most mountain range and have the first opportunity to wring moisture out of the easterly trade winds as the come ashore. The result is the beautiful, lush rainforest known as El Yunque Rain Forest which is a national treasure.

As one drives south on PR 191 through El Yunque, one slowly climbs the Luquillo Mountains and as the elevation increases the environment becomes wetter and wetter resulting in continuous transitions in the rainforest until one reaches the dwarf forest at the highest elevations where the extreme moisture stunts the growth of the trees.

There are numerous opportunities for hiking through the beautiful rainforest, waterfalls, picnic areas with food available for purchase, and places to swim and cool off on a hot tropical day.

El Yunque, and therefore the Luquillo Mountains, are a must visit but are a very popular attraction so avoiding weekends and holidays is a good idea if possible but whenever you visit, arriving as early as possible (open 7:30 am till 6:00pm) is always a good idea.

When looking at the mountain range you will notice that there are many shades of green, so many there are far too many to count. A photographic moment you'll always remember. A panoramic picture is even better.

A great view and workout

We drove to the end of the road and parked at the trailhead. Hiked the trail to the top where there are some communication towers and a lookout. Spectacular view on a clear day with a nice cool breeze. Its around a 4 mile roundtrip so bring water and snacks. Highly recommend for those who like a workout and great views.

Luquillo Mountains!

OMG! You can not go wrong in Liquillo. The area is amazing, hiking the rain forest. Or the best beaches for swimming or snorkeling or surfing!

Rain Forest Visit

Well worth the trip. Some trails still closed from hurricane which was disappointing bit a nice contrast to beach and ocean activities. Drove in from North. Would like to drive in from the south next time

Pretty Falls

Beautiful Falls this is a beautiful hike and the sounds of the frogs are beautiful. Nature lovers will have fun. Hikes are some what slippery so wear tennis shoes. Breathtaking Views in El Yunque National Forest. It is a must see and if you can go to all the falls then do it. Go early in the day as they close early.

Beautiful

Mountains with hiking trails, waterfalls, lush green rain forest filled with a large variety of flowers and plant life as well as a variety of fauna. Beautiful views from the tops of observation towers located in various places around the mountain range.

All the waterfalls in El Yunque are breathtaking. They are so clear, nicely in temperature, it is amazing. You can take a dip in them, so do not forget to wear a bathing suit.

Fine place to take a dip

On hot days, you will find many families and young people bathing in the refreshing pools. I also love to hike or jog on the glorious trails which can keep you busy for a long time.
