The walkway that leads along the water to the fort was blocked off and said under construction. However, we did enjoy seeing the local art, got a snow cone, watched some locals dance. Nice atmosphere. Very pretty Sunday evening in the park area.

This wall is old, construction beginning in 1634. The history of this wall is the history of Viejo San Juan. However, it appears that wall is not being maintained and is starting to erode. I realize that the wall isn't used for a defensive position, but the historical significance of it should command more efforts to keep it in tact. It's not a thing to see since it surrounds the entire city, but the shear size is still quite impressive, especially when you realize just how long ago it was constructed.

San Juan counts in one of the best protected cities from the colonial era. Spaniards built two fortresses to protect it both, from land and sea. In between them also a long and tall wall was built.
This wall stretches from the Paseo de Princesa, starting close to the cruise port and winding its way all along the old town to the El Morro fort. It's very pleasant to walk it and you pass several attractions like the Rogativa, San Juan Gate,....with spectacular views of the bay and Catano village across it.

After being closed because of debris washout by the high waves, we finally got to walk this path. Nice views of the fortress and city walls, as well as the ocean and San Juan Bay.
Bring water to stay hydrated as it gets hot !! Will also walk by the Save a Gato area where feral cats are fed.

This wall was built to protect Old San Juan. There is a nice walk way along the wall that leads to the La Puerta de San Juan (the gate). Definitely, a scenic walk (maybe a romantic spot to watch a sunset over the water).

Wall around La Muralla de San Juan... this is a very interesting place for historical reasons but also a very beautiful place since the views to the sea are unique...

We were walking around looking for a place to eat, walked by a tall gentleman and asked him if there was a good Puerto Rican place nearby and he said yes, right there, I’m the chef. So we followed, place was pretty much empty (note: we were eating at an unusual hour). The chef took our order, friendly, funny, and since it was just us service was pretty casual but we liked not informalities, not having to rush since it was just us. Anyway, we all loved our meal, mofongo mostly. But I’m really writing this review to say that the crab cake arepa was the most amazing dish I’ve ever had! It’s an appetizer but you get two hearty portions. If you like crab you don’t want to pass this up. Please don’t change the recipe, it’s a winner!

My cruise took me to San Juan and this amazing place.
A wall so huge and thick it defies all descriptions. You must see it by
yourself.
The walk is alongside the water and into little secluded parks and gardens
with huge iguanas and singing birds all over.
After the fountain and the parks you'll arrive to a huge wooden door
that leads you to the older part of San Juan with romantic cobblestone streets,
gorgeous old houses ( most been redone and put to today standards).
Here and there you'll find local street peddlers selling from water to ice cream
and other local delicacies.
There is a grand cathedral open to the public with a gorgeous interior
proper of the XVIII Century.
Dress appropriately for hot weather and comfy walking shoes with
a wide brim hat and of course a camera or two.
Most enjoyable and picturesque destination, perhaps the best in San Juan!

The city walls, La Muralla, are a 3 mile (4.8k) long fortification that was originally built between 1634 and 1638 and improved and made higher in 1765 that, along with the forts El Moro and San Cristobal, were successful in repelling attacks by English, Dutch and pirates. With its iconic garitas (sentry boxes) it is one of the instantly recognizable symbols of San Juan and Puerto Rico.
A walk on Paseo del Morro along the western base of the wall, next to San Juan Bay, is picturesque and surprisingly peaceful compared to the constant bustle of the city just above. Paseo del Moro can be reached by following Paseo de la Princesa west to the Roots Fountain (Raíces Fountain) then following the walk to the right heading north, or by exiting the old city through San Juan Gate (Puerta de San Juan). This walk is best done in the morning as the afternoon sun reflecting from the stone wall can make things quite uncomfortable, or in the evening when the sun is low enough that the reflected heat is no longer an issue.

Amazing structure. It is just impressive how big and well kept is. It should be a place to know when in Puerto Rico
