El Velorio

Good trip to see local, egyptian and other cultures exhibitions. Home to "El Velorio" from Francisco Oller. Magnificent painting with lots of details to study.

This museum is located on the campus of University of Puerto Rico (UPR) in Rio Piedras. To get here, take the Tren Urbano to the UPR station (first underground stop) exit and you are at the entrance to the campus. The museum is the first building on the left. This Museum houses "El Velorio" by Francisco Oller. This painting alone,... More

This museum not only features "El Velorio" by Francisco Oller and very interesting egyptian mummy. We like to visit the museum periodically because of the temporary exhibitions. We loved the exhibition with replicas of "El Velorio" objetcts and the "Premios de la Bienal de San Juan del Grabado Latinoamericano y del Caribe" exhibit. Children enjoy the activities during their "Domingo... More

The museum is small--only two exhibits--so it won't take long to get through. The most difficult part is figuring out how to get there. We were coming from Old San Juan. The way we did it was to pick up a bus at the depot (I think an M3? But I think an M1 also works...) and take it down... More

We were staying in the University district of San Juan, and had a full day for exploring the area. After visiting the university (also worth the stop), we chose to visit this small museum of art and anthropology. It was worth the visit! The admission is free, and guides are available to explain the exibits. The student taking us through... More

Even though its collection is small, its academic and cultual relevance is high. The building, designed by Henry Klumb in the late 1950's is a mature and serenely beautiful setting for the collections. At the forefront of the University of Puerto Rico's Rio Piedras Campus, right next to the 'Tren Urbano' Station, its accessible and appealing.
