This cemetery is really picturesque from a distance. The chapel and monuments really stand out against the blue of the sky and sea. However, when walking through there is a sad amount of trash and debris. Being a historic cemetery, damaged markers and such are not surprising. The trash though. Ugh, just sad to see.
When I stopped by they were preparing for an upcoming burial and I had the opportunity to speak with the cemetery workers. One of them took the time to show me around the cemetery, pointing out historic markers, and explaining some of the funerary practices in Puerto Rico.

I decided it would be more respectful if I didn’t wander around inside this cemetery which is very full of graves. Instead I opted to look at it from the battlements surround it which were part of Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The monuments are a mix of styles and go from standard tombs to grand monuments to the deceased. The second section which is through an archway has a central mausoleum which I assume it meant for ash interment. From beautiful place right on the coast.

We first visited Santa Maria Magdalena in 2013 prior to hurricane Maria. We returned this year and were sad to see the damage. It is still a beautiful, peaceful cemetery. Take a quick taxi from the cruise ship pier and enjoy the walk back down. There are so many beautiful things to see on the trip back. Print a map and you can walk all of it in a short time. We are sad that Hurricane Fiona has caused more damage to this beautiful area but hope to go back again.

When walking the huge lawn towards the El Morro fortress I spotted this cemetery on the right hand side and decided to visit it after the fort.
I've visited many famous cemeteries worldwide and I can tell this one by far has the best setting and views. The location beneath the historic fort ramparts and just in front of the ocean is unbeatable (if you can say that for a cemetery).
You can see the whole cemetery up from the ramparts, from several points around, just be careful as there's no fence. For a closer look you can walk around, descend and enter the cemetery. Many famous historic PR figures are buried here and the monuments range from ordinary stones to big work of art sculptures. Unfortunately, many of them show signs of neglect and debris, as well it's not maintained well with lot of litter around, so I deduct one star for that.

The cemetery was beautiful. The statues were amazing. It was laid out differently than other cemetery's. Very old and new were mixed together. I love to visit old cemetery's. There were 2 sections and both were beautiful. Please respect the grounds when visiting. There are chickens and roosters roaming freely on the grounds.

It is hard to know how to be respectful in a cemetery...I love taking photos but always have that pang of guilt when there are someone’s loved ones right there. Of course, there was a funeral occurring when we were there and someone preparing a tomb. I tried to keep out of the way but I love some of the angels and writings on some graves. There was even a grave with comedy and tragedy masks designed on it. I did not expect the chickens to be there...I put some water in a dish that had gone empty for a baby chick. Strange to see but interesting all the same. This is worth at least an hour to look around and wonder.

The pictures don't do it justice! However, it is in a sad state of disrepair. Many of the headstones fallen and broken. You think the state would take head to restore it as it brings many visitors! I love wonderful cemeteries and have seen many! I would rank this one in my top 3 throughout the world!

The most remarkable cemetery I have ever seen!
This is the perfect place for a mortal body to spend eternity in.
If you haven't got the time to walk through it, at least make an effort to see it from the walls of Castillo de San Felipe del Morro.
Another must visit when in San Juan!

Wow this cemetery is spectacular. It's one of the most unusual cemeteries I have ever seen. It overlooks the ocean. The tombstones are very elaborate and old. It is definitely worth the trip.

Does anyone know the schedule of the cemetery in San Juan? I've been calling the number on Google and I haven't had any luck getting anyone. Last time I went I attempted a few times and was never able to go in and I'm returning again in 2 weeks and would really love to enter and visit my Grandmother's tombstone, Thx for any feed back!

We would like to take a taxi from the pier (arriving on cruise ship) to the cemetery and Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Would there be taxis available to take us back to the ship? Or is there public transportation available?
Written 6 August 2015
Yes it is a short walk from the terminal, however when we arrived by cruise ship, there was a shuttle bus that would take you to old town and the walk is only about 5 minutes.

Where is the closest lodging to this attraction?
Written 1 January 2015
A hotel in Old San Juan, such as the El Convento or the ones closer to the cruise ship ports, though the hotels in Condado are not too far away (short cab/bus ride).
