Yes it's just a gate but it's the history behind it. It right on the ocean front so it affords great photo ops.

We were following a walking tour from a guide book and happened upon the gate which was the formal gate of the city.

Whether you drop down from the street above or take La Princessa all the way around it is worth stopping by this gate.

For a quick walk and great view of what travelers viewed when they arrived 500 years ago? It's a pretty interesting sight. It's not a long boring walk just make sure you get a sunny day and the rest will fall in to place.

This is another part of San Juan we found on our travels. Make sure you read the history of the gate to find out more about it and enjoy the views of the beach in front. We spotted pelicans and got some great photos.

Somehow, after reading, I expected something more dramatic. Of everything on walking tour, this did not stand out. El Morro was fabulous though.

Interesting that this was the main enterance to the city for hundreds of years. To think who else what through this gate. Leads to paseo de princessa and paseo de murro.

No tickets required! Only for the fortresses and they are cheap. The beaches are good and you can do as you like. Pretty safe IMHO.
