I only wish I had more time to sit and discuss art with the owner of this unassuming small stall that houses a wealth of paintings by some of negril's finest artists. Yes, there is the smaller rememberances from your jamaica trip, which you will look on fondly long after your trip is over, but there is also some serious works worthy of a prime spot on your living room wall. I recently purchased a third painting from my favorite local artist, as well as a new addition from a Haitian, local based artist. I went to patrick looking for one painting. However, to my surprise, at this shop, it was not a matter of finding a painting that grabbed me, but making a decision from his rather large inventory. Patrick is knowledgeable and helpful, and very accommodating in terms of payment, that is, credit card. Patrick will not pressure you, but will help you. He was incredibly in tune with what I wanted. And I can't wait to see my two new additions hanging on my walls. Patrick is a serious art lover and I only wish I had more time to sit and learn. Next time.

We just returned from our vacation at the Grand Lido Negril which is across the street from the Rutland Point Craft Market.
We were at the market 25yrs ago before it became that organized and made friends with Cecil Crooks who goes by "Crooksy". We purchased a beautiful carving from him back then that we still have.
We went back to say hello and reunite with an old friend. The market is more organized now, they have an association now as well with a President. At least they are trying.
We explained that people will be nervous if they are too aggressive and they agreed a couple of the vendors were a little excited to see buyers and spoke to them so they would relax.
They are struggling because a number of vendors are setup on the beach farther down the bay on future Sandals development illegally without permits. These people are taking much of the tourism dollars from them.
The Rutland Point vendors are paying their rent, have a permit and are legitimate. They even have a Scotia Bank machine in front of the market so Scotia Bank must think they are a good place to shop.
Go support them please because they are really nice people. Many are brothers and sisters running different shops. It is very family oriented.
I donated a website to help them out which is www.RutlandPoint.com and you can see how the shops look.
Go visit my friend "Crooksy" at his shop he calls the "Rainbow Shop", mention Bill & Terri or mention the website and you will get a better discount.
I also donated a website to Crooksy - www.cecilcrooks.com
Enjoy your vacation and say hello for me.

This excellent market should be MUCH, MUCH busier than it is! There are some great, locally-made arts and crafts here; none of that "Made in China" crap. Some of the wood carvings are particularly good. We bought several wood carvings and I also got myself a pretty bracelet. I would have bought a painting, too, if there were an inch of wall space left in my house.
The people here are friendly and proud of their wares. Yes, everybody wants to sell you something, but a polite "no thank you" is all you need if you're really not interested. But I would encourage you to talk to the vendors and learn about their lives and the artists' work. It's a shame that all the buses from the resorts (except for one) bypass this place, because they should be stopping here and filling the place with tourists. They are doing a great job of renovating the stalls right now. Very attractive! You can also grab a bite to eat when you're here.
Another reviewer complained about "hastling". Please! For starters, if you can't spell "hassling", I question your credibility. Regardless, people are trying to make a living here. If you don't want to buy anything, just say “no”! But better yet, DO buy something, and don't be afraid to haggle a bit (but don't be one of those tourists paying $500 a night at a plush resort who won't part with an extra 50 cents when it comes to buying a souvenir.)
I'd encourage you to check out all the stalls, "hastling" or not, because while there is some repetition in what's available, there are also some unique things to be found.
And a pair of Canadians have donated a very nice website to help out the vendors:
http://rutlandpoint.com/
There is a Scotiabank ABM right at the entrance, so you can fill your wallet before going in to shop.
Please stop here, take a look around, and buy yourself something authentically Jamaican to take home. And when someone smiles at you, smile back. Respect!

This craft centre is located across from Grand Lido Resort and beside Petcom Petrol Station. Most of the items the vendors sell is hand made and in some cases one of a kind. A few of them even take orders for custom pieces.

Tiny shop upon shop with pretty much the same things in them. Very pressured to buy from every corner of the place! Lady come here, lady you come to me next, lady i have something different...yikes!! We gave ourselves 2 hours there and thank God our driver stayed there because after about an hour i needed a Red Stripe! I think I left there buying things I never intended to buy but there were some nice wooden things there and some talented people, just crazy pressure from everyone. We left and went to Times Square shopping mall. If this is how you like to shop-then go here but I would say just go to Times Square and get the same thing without being hastled and I actually found things cheaper at Times Square than at the market

Not fashionable or orderly. Lots of shacks selling craft, tee shirts, mementos. Expect this and it can be a good experience.
Shop around and negotiation are the keys to good deals.
People friendly, assertive but most aren't to pushy.
Few suggestions:
- if you are not interested in the wares of a vendor, don't interact, say No Thanks and keep walking.
- unless you're interested in a specific item, don't ask the price as they'll assume you want it.
- if you see something you like and ask the price, immediately say no, you'll need to shop more but might come back. The vendor will then start dropping the price further.
- have plenty of small bills. Often they say they have no change for a purchase and try to get you to buy more so they don't have to give change.

My partner and I ventured to the craft market in an attempt to get some unique Jamaican products, however from the moment we were dropped there, we were hassled and pushed to purchase. They don't really understand the concept of allowing people to browse, it's very frustrating. We couldn't get out of there faster, and that was after being literally dragged into 5 stores. They also get vocally annoyed if you don't want to buy something. If you can avoid it, do.

When we go back it will be to see the woodcarver! Best part of the "shopping experience". I asked for him to make my husband and I something special. And, wow, did he deliver! And really reasonably priced. The rest of the market was pretty much what we've come to expect from shopping here. Same thing over and over, stall after stall. So it worth noting when you find a true artist.

I agree with the last review, don't go on Sundays, most will be close because of church or time with families. I went twice during my stay! I hoped in a car and went with my wife one day and then one time by myself. The pros: tons of shops....tons . Friendly people. Good prices if you know how to deal, and never felt scared! It is more rural then the shops at Times Square. But more authentic! I went because I love tall and intricate statues. I'm going again in (may) I will write another review
