Golden Beach at Puerto Plata has its pros and cons, depending on what you're looking for in a beach experience. Here's a breakdown to help you decide:

Pros:

Relaxing atmosphere: Great for lounging on the beach and soaking up the sun.
Decent prices: Compared to cruise ship excursions, the souvenir market and some of the restaurants offer reasonable prices.
Chair and umbrella rentals: Available for a comfortable beach setup (prices listed).
Security: Police presence deters major hassles, and vendors are generally manageable.
Decent food and drinks: A few bars and restaurants offer options near the beach.

Cons:

Average beach: Not the most spectacular scenery compared to other Caribbean beaches.
Rough entrance: Construction and debris can create a messy first impression.
Unsuitable for snorkeling: Not the best water clarity for underwater exploration.
Waves can be rough: Not ideal for young children or weak swimmers (lifeguards not present).

Tips:

Consider the taxi ride (25-35 minutes depending on traffic).
Pack your own snacks and drinks if you're on a tight budget.
Bring your own towels.
This beach might not be the best for little ones due to potential wave strength.

Overall:

Golden Beach offers a decent beach experience with some drawbacks. If you're looking for a relaxing day on the sand with some shopping and dining options, it can be a good choice. However, if you prioritize pristine beaches, snorkeling, or activities for young children, you might want to consider other options in Puerto Plata.

Disappointed in beach . Littered with garbage and wood . Was able to swim but had to watch for logs in the water . They try to clean it up daily especially around the spots they bring in excursions from the cruise ships. They work hard with several crews daily but seems the garbage comes back the next day .

This is a great beach with nice sand, no rocks, wide beach area with some wind and waves. Water was warm and lovely, seating was difficult however.

We stayed at the Viva V Heavens and the beach was excellent. No sea weeds and clean waters. Could swim quite a bit all through the week.

Nice beach. The water was beautiful. We were barraged by locals trying to sell us something or offer massages. This activity really detracted from our overall experience

The sand is like powder and is beautiful. The water is calm and clear and looks like turquoise. The beach is very clean and we were able to rent beds with canopies.

There were many restaurants at the beach. Some are cheaper in price than others. The least expensive one was very good. To park it looks odd but you can tip the guy that tell you where you can park $1.00, parking is free. Have $50 pesos to use the bathrooms. They have umbrellas and chairs that you pay for at the beach. Beautiful blue beach with some waves. The drinks are cheap, I got a Pina colada in a pineapple. There are locals that try to sell you stuff but not too bad. Weather in February can be a bit cool like low 80's enough to get a tan.

We enjoyed the beach but it is pretty rough water and a drop off to get in. We booked an excursion with vacations to go who claim that they are up to 40% cheaper than booking with the cruise line. From our experience it was not cheaper. If you’re on a cruise, just go outside the gate and get a taxi. We paid $89US dollars each for 2 people through vacations to go. We are Canadians so add 40% to that, the tour company on the island was Peurto Plata Adventures. Unfortunately they don’t give an exact leave time and say 45 minutes after docking. Our ship docking time was 9:00 am on our cruise compass. When we arrived for our excursion they had already left. We had already paid for the excursion. Luckily a very helpful man named Hipolito Minier took us under his wing, let us use a phone to contact the company. The woman, apparently the owner refused to come get us or send a car for us and hung up on me twice. After several other helpful people at the port got involved, knowing that we had already paid, the tour van showed up to take us to the beach. At the resort we were given 1 small drink of rum punch. When we asked for another later we were told all the drinks were gone in the van with the driver. On arrival at the resort Blue Jack Tar, we were shown where the bathroom was and three showers. Unfortunately when we went to shower there is no water in the showers or bathroom. I would suggest that you don’t book in advance and get royally screwed. Just take a taxi at the port. A couple we had met onboard our ship were sitting next to us at the beach and only paid $30 each return for the same experience.
