Catedral Primada de America is a must see if you're in Santo Domingo. I didn't buy the audio guide, but I honestly don't think it would've added much to the experience. It has several impressive feature so I'd recommend visiting it. However, overall, I wouldn't say it is breathtaking.

We were a bit disappointed. There are so many smaller churches that have retained the richness of the culture that this one kind of palls in comparison. Yes, I know...it is large but look for the smaller churches - they are the hidden gems. We stumbled upon a wedding on Monday evening in a small church near our hotel -... More

Beautiful old cathedral on par with high caliber European cathedrals. You can visit on your own or there are guides in the square just outside that can give you a guided tour for a nominal amount. For sure worth at least a quick visit.

If you are in SD you have to visit. Use an official city guild. It is worth the small amount to pay! The cafes are a great place eat.

The Catedral Primada de America is an important historical and cultural monument, part of the rich heritage of the Dominican Republic. It is an active Roman Catholic cathedral, and also is able to be visited by tourists. It is managed by a very good visitors program.

what would be a quite unimpressive basilica in Spain. But built 1521-1540 under the conditions of the new founded colony it's quite a unique masterpiece with many gothic elements

The first (" La Primada" in Spanish) Catholic cathedral in the New World is something that you have to visit while you be in Santo Domingo. It is a piece of history built by breaks. As an architect I could tell -withouth read anything in a book- how the different chapels were added in different times, changing styles and colors.... More

Such a lovely building from the outside in and is the center of the colonial area. We had a guided tour (were seated with earphones to get the history and then roamed on our own). Each private chapel is personally decorated so each has its own flavor. If you're going to Santo Domingo, this is a must to get the... More
