We toured this area on a Sunday and Monday. It was full of people, but everyone friendly and polite. We walked around at night and it felt very safe. Lots of people, shops open and live music being played in the open air. Beautiful architecture to see and lots of history to take in. Loved this area

During a tour of Zona Colonial, we stopped by the Cathedral. If you're going on a warm day, make sure you wear something that comes to your knees. If not they'll give you cloth to wrap around you to cover your knees. It's a beautiful space with interesting history to learn. If you are spiritual or religious this would be... More

As with most cathedrals, this one is gorgeous. The tour is actually self guided with audio recording in your chosen language. When you exit the cathedral you are in this public square which has a European feel to it.

This Cathedral Primada de América was of course the first to be erected in the New World. Started by Diego Columbus in 1514, son of, the building was inspired by the cathedral in Seville. It has several styles within the building combined, like gothic, classical, baroque and Spanisch plateresque. Much was added on and/or changed during the centuries. Francis Drake... More

for the visitor with casual interest in history, the audio tour provides sufficient overview of the site. This is a church, for God's sake! Don't show up in shorts or tank tops, although they have wraps for the unprepared.

Definetly worth a visit when coming to Santo Domingo. Audio tours available and a nice place to visit if you are into history and buildings. I have seen more impressive cathedrals but nevertheless one of the more unique buildings on Dominican Republic
