It was included with the excursion we bought. As a construction it is something striking, the entrance costs 2 dollars. Inside you can see things from the countries that contributed to its construction, but many of them have very basic or neglected things. (As a personal opinion, I think it is a city that gives a lot of importance to colonization and you can hardly see anything of its own culture, but it may be that I have not gone to the right places).

The Columbus Lighthouse (Faro a Colón) is a massive concrete memorial to the famous explorer. Built-in the shape of a cross and capable of projecting a bright cross-shaped beam that can be seen for miles, it also houses a mausoleum and museum.

It is one of the larger tributes to Christopher Columbus you can find in Santo Domingo. The massive memorial was inaugurated just before the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America. Inside the concrete building, you’ll find a mausoleum said to hold the remains of a famous explorer, as well as a museum, several libraries, and exhibitions from different countries across the Americas and the world.

On any given day, you can see a wide range of indigenous cultural artifacts from around the Americas exhibited in the various chambers of the museum. The ‘lighthouse’ is perhaps best known for its powerful light display projecting into the night sky.

We made a pilgrimage to the Columbus Lighthouse before returning our rented car at SDQ airport. Getting there from Route 3 was an interesting and challenging experience in itself. We finally found the access roads and made it to our destination at 4:00, but the building was closed. All we could do was walk around the massive structure and peek through a crack and a locked gate to see a lonely looking military man in uniform who was sitting in a plastic chair. He was apparently guarding the bones of Christopher Columbus. Frankly, we felt that the monument grounds were a little sad; the landscaping wasn't very well maintained. Regardless, it's a unique site that honors an amazing person.

It is a place of Museums and there is the tomb of Christopher Columbus, it is guarded by military. So it is a tourist place that includes the Tourist companies. They don't let you be on the spot long. You can enter the museum by paying for admission if you are given the time. The setting is beautiful.

The best thing is the inside. The structure attracts attention by itself, the design in the form of a Latin cross, against hurricanes, the religious inscriptions, the monument where the remains of Columbus are (supposedly). But the best thing for me, is the internal museum, where there are allusions to all the countries of America. This was the most interesting thing. For example, there were several exhibitions from the Far East, Japan, China, India and very beautiful and striking, inviting you to take pictures there. Do not miss the opportunity to visit it, I had been told that it was boring and not worth it, but if it is.

Not worth it. It is poorly maintained, it also indicates that it is under construction and there are many closed rooms. The exhibitions are in an orderly manner, little light, unbearable heat... it was the last thing we visited when we were already going to the airport and it was a shame because it left a bad taste in our mouths.

Seems like you either love or you hate it, I loved it. After living here for many years I finally decided to pay it a visit. The building is impressive, the tomb of Columbus is more impressive and the exhibits are very interesting. It's free to visit and you can see everything in 45 minutes.

The lighthouse was built as the mausoleum for Christopher Columbus. However, you need to be in Seville Spain to see his real tomb. So beware. The building is a vast concrete ugly block more in keeping with Soviet architecture. Best to pass by without stopping.

A truly impressive work, dedicated to Cristóvão Colombo. During the tour, we stopped next to the lighthouse where a little of its history was explained to us. After that, I became curious, I read more and was very sorry that the tour to São Domingo had not included a visit to this lighthouse (it would have been much better than going around various shops). That's for next time, but I suggest you read the entire history surrounding its construction and current affairs.

I really don’t understand what is the idea with this place. It is a massive grey building, with a chapel or church inside. There’s long aisles with exhibitions with all kind of stuff from different countries, There is no explanation, there is no light so you can read the few signs and there is absolutely to clue why they are showing stuff from Japan and also explaining something about the European Union?! Outside you can see the Pope Mobil. Don’t spend you time a this place.
