If the outside is any indication.....
Americas’ oldest cathedral is dedicated to St. Mary of the Incarnation. Completed in 1550 after 46 years in notable Gothic style whose architecture is reminiscent of European cathedrals. The outside limestone edifice is a golden coral colour sporting unique façades of archways, ribbed walls, bell towers, columns and rose windows. Inside there is a renowned treasury with an excellent art collection of ancient woodcarvings, paintings, furnishings, funerary monuments, silver, and jewelry which unfortunately I was unable to view as the cathedral was closed. Christopher Columbus was once intombed here but now resides in a crypt at the Columbus Lighthouse, here in Santo Domingo as he had wished.

The Oldest Cathedral in the Americas
This place is amazing. The oldest cathedral in the Americas was begun in 1504 and finished in 1550. It is the first one ordered to be built by the Pope at that time. It is not as ornate as I had imagined, and I have visited other churches in Peru, Brazil and Mexico that have more silver and gold in them, but this is worth the visit. Women and teens are asked not to show their knees, and are given wraps to use when in the cathedral.

Absolutely one of the most beautiful churches I have ever been to in my life. 16 chapels inside. The structure is amazing. It's a very emotional place no matter what your higher power or beliefs are. Just sit a moment and reflect. Say a prayer and give thanks for all the good life has to offer.

Best known as the first cathedral of the Americas. The Cathedral of the Americas (Catedral Primada de America) is an imposing landmark overlooking Columbus Park in Santo Domingo’s historic district. Built-in the early 16th century, the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor is the oldest Catholic cathedral in the New World and among the finest examples of Gothic architecture outside Europe.

The majestic building is unmissable thanks to its golden-tinted facade that’s even more impressive at sunrise and sunset. Behind its solid limestone walls are aisles under ornate vaulted ceilings, a great collection of early 16th-century paintings and colonial-era artifacts. Located in the Colonial Zone, the cathedral is one of Santo Domingo’s most famous religious sites and contains a large collection of woodcarving and religious artifacts.

A functioning house of worship, the cathedral still holds mass regularly. You can also tour the interior of the cathedral and its grounds, either on a self-guided audio tour or during a guided sightseeing tour that also features other highlights in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.

There is a dress code to go inside. However, if you forget to dress appropriately, church employees will loan you a blanket or shawl to cover any exposed parts.

The cathedral itself is nice to walk in and look around, though you have to pay a small fee to enter. I encountered a very mediocre 'tour guide' who posed as a gate guard, so watch out for that. The cathedral can definitely be administered better.

Beautiful cathedral. Work a look. The audio tour they give you was very informative. You do have to make sure you are dressing properly (no shorts or bare shoulders).

Today we explored more of the Zone Colonial which included a walk through The Cathedral of the Americas, my mom would have stayed in this cathedral all day, pretty amazing. They covered Donna’s legs, I didn’t think they looked that bad, lol.

If you’re Catholic, go to a mass here. We have very little Spanish but we’re able to follow the mass. So much history here! It’s gorgeous. Not open very frequently for tours. No shorts allowed. Pants or dresses.
