Tuesday 16th April we were on a Tour of the ancient Colonial City as part of the Tour we walked from Parque Colón along to the top Calle el Conde where this mausoleum is situated in the Parque Independencia with Puerta del Conde nearby.

El Altar de la Patria (Altar of the Homeland) is a large marble mausoleumin where the remains of the founding fathers of the Country, have been laid to rest. They became known as Los Trinitarios and were Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Ramón Matías Mella.

Also in the mausoleum are 3 life sized statues which appear to be looking down on the tomb below. An eternal flame continually burns in memory of Los Trinitarios. There was a soldier standing on duty at the entrance to the Mausoleum.

This reminded me of a smaller scale of the Lincoln Monument back in my country in Washington DC. Nice setup and worth a visit while in old Santo Domingo.

Altar de la Patria – a monument located in the city park. Entry was free. It was nice to be able to visit.
