Here you have everything you need close together! Small shops, bars, restaurants & hotels have found their home in Pietermaai District. For me it's old Willemstad, only 5 minutes east of todays downtown /citycenter. There are still many old houses along Pietermaai - here you will find some of the most colorful buildings in the world, old and new, side by side. Many peoples get particularly enchanted by the still half-renovated, half-crumbled neighborhood they find at Pietermaai - me too :) Go and have a look! Many cozy places, relax, sitt down, enjoy the life! in the Caribic! :)

I had the pleasure of staying in the Pietermaai District on my last trip to Curacao and absolutely loved it. Easy walk to the historic core of Willemstad, totally safe area with beautiful colorful buildings mixed with some crumbling and awaiting renovation, lots of restaurants and bars to choose from, and fun boutique hotels right on the water. Makes a perfect base for a wonderful Curacao trip. I stayed in Hotel Bijblauw in Pietermaai and loved it! Returning again soon.

We drove Pietermaai—the easiest way to explore this expanse of Willemstad. It’s not as easy to walk as Otrobanda side, although we found good eats. There are nice landhuis/ places to rent, too, but also “vacant” lots. A large expanse was bought by the company associated with the former Marriott, which has been closed a few years now. (Reportedly the Marriott ran into financial troubles and will be reopened first, before the company builds and opens a Hard Rock/ hotel here.) We had plans to see the little museum in Avila beach hotel, and found it was nice to get away from the cruiseship-crowds downtown. The beaches are “artificial,” although really, they’re just filled in with sand or ground limestone. Curacao allows erosion-control by building beaches with material from the quarry /mountain to cover the naturally rocky shore. It’s beautiful, any which way; and for advanced divers, there’s more to the view with the shipwreck...100 feet or so under the sea!
