This fortress is very similar to El Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico, although not as extensive or as well-preserved. However, it occupies a beautiful spot at the entrance to Santiago harbor and is a great vantage point for pictures. The grounds are well kept and I would encourage visitors to take the multiple sets of stairs (which you have... More

Take your time here --- it's the best part Santiago by far. We have seen tons of forts and castles but this has spectacular views and a lot of heritage.

Its worth to visit this castle. You have a great view to the bay of Santiago de Cuba. Its just a short trip from Santiago to Del Morro.

Possibly the only place near Santiago de Cuba with a nice caribbean Breeze. The whole trip to the fortress is nice aswell fort itself got a lot of info but most of it is only in Spanish.

I visited with a group and have an informative introduction then was able to wander around on my own. It's very well done and a step back in time.

Great place to visit full of history. Entrance was free but cost for taking photos inside think it was 5CUC. Fantastic breathtaking views across the Caribbean sea. Visited as part of a tour. Only downside is everything was in Spanish without English translation. Good place to visit.

This is an imposing old fortress, built overlooking the entrance to the estuary and the harbour. It's only about 7/8km out from Santiago centre by taxi. When we were there, there was a delightful singing coming from one of the old open castle rooms -- a trio of ladies singing beautifully and gently! The fortress displays details of many former... This fortress was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997 ~ cited as the best preserved and most complete example of Spanish-American military architecture. Locally it is known as El Morro...and was constructed on a series of terraces...with four main levels and three large ramparts to house the artillery. Our guide told us that the supplies would be... I loved exploring this fort and as a photographer, I kept finding beautiful angles to take a shot followed by even more beautiful ones! There are a lot of stairs to climb, but well worth it. A beautiful restaurant nearby has a restroom, as there is none here and on the walk from the bus to this fort we found... More
