What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

We were on a cruise with a 2 day Havana stop. Old Havana was like a step back in time. As soon as you left the terminal, everything was old world and untouched. The old buildings, cobblestone roads and vintage cars. It was very easy...More

This is a nice spot to walk through and eat outside. Colorful and safe, though very touristy. Tourists sometimes bring school supplies and baseballs to drop off at the school in the plaza.

The Plaza Vieja is a beautiful old square, in one of the oldest parts of Old Havana. There are lots of cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby. It's a great location for exploring the old city, too.

We loved the Old Square. It was very beautiful and very busy. There are a lot of little cafes with good food and beer to enjoy. Everyone was super nice and we went back more than once.

This square, recently renovated, offers everything you need in Havana: shadow, live music, cocktails, food, interaction with local crowd, good coffee. Enjoy!

I have seen the changes from before the renovations began to the present beauty. Lots of nice places to eat, art galleries and the best coffee spot in town (El Escorial). There is an elementary school right in the Plaza and it is fun to...More

Hi. We also did a two day through NCL. We arrived in the morning. Tip regarding that. When they announce to you where to get your "number" for debarkation, be sure to get in that line about 15 minutes before they hand them... More

We have twelve hours to see as much of Havana as possible. What are the highlights? And one person has a mobility scooter, will it fit in classic convertible trunk? Where is the best place to convert currency and how much should you convert? Is there a lot of crime I. The streets?

I assume, since you only have 12 hours, that you are visiting for the day as part of a cruise. I would recommend that you hire a local car/driver/guide. I used Nosotros Cubameamos and really liked them. My guide was... More
