I've basically been waiting to see Omaha Beach since I took an interest in WWII history. The vast majority of it is now a resort town. It's no doubt an eerie place to be. It was surreal seeing my daughter run and play on the...More

As i said in a previous post, this is the spot that will overcome you. To stand on the sand that those brave troops landed on, and died on, is simply overwhelming

A small stretch of beach overlooked by cliffs that in 1944 were manned by Germans waiting for the invasion. this is where the Allies landed under ennemy gun fire and liberated Europe from fascism. It remains impressive even after more then 70 years have passed.

We visited Omaha Beach on a day in April that was exactly like the horrible day of the D-Day landing. It was cold and raining and windy. Walking on the beach one could easily imagine the terror of the thousands of young men that day...More

Only standing looking at this windswept beach could I even begin to appreciate what those young heroes had to face on June 6 , 1944 . They landed at low tide, so the distance they had to try to cover was incredible and they had...More

First let me say that my cousin was killed there on D-Day so perhaps my reaction is not typical. Regardless, walking this beach knowing as intimately as I did what those young heroes faced, it is hard not to be moved. As it happened, we...More

This is a windswept beach, even on a fine day, and was the central beach for the American armies who landed on D-Day (and of course the 101st Airbourne who parachuted in 30km inland). It is great to see - and two individual monuments mark...More

A must see place to visit for all Americans. Only when you are on site do you begin to fully understand the challenges and horrors our troops experienced when landing her on June 6th, 1944. True an awesome experience.

It is inspiring to look at the beach at Omaha and consider what the soldiers who conducted the amphibious invasion must have gone through. Definitely worth a visit, but prepare for the weather!

This was the highlight of our trip to France. Words cannot describe the feeling of walking the beach thinking about the lives lost. True heros. I wish that everyone could make it here and reflect on the magnitude of history. Absolutely breath taking and moving....More

Extremely. There are no physical barriers and it's not at all steep. Indeed could be fun to run along he broad open sand.
How many other similar sites can you access nearby and would you need a whole day for say 3-4 sites? We plan to come by car from Caen. Do you need tickets for these sites? Could you give me details about opening times & costs. We plan to be in Caen between 27 & 29 May. Can we do a tour on our own?

Simply stated, you can reach the Normandy Beaches via car in about 2-3 hours from Paris; not sure about Caen. Plan about 2-3 days in the area. Hopefully, your time of travel will not be filled with tourists so you can... More
