This is a castle!!!

Amazing views across the harbour, the city and the sea. The castle is huge. It takes a good couple of hours to see it all, probably three or more to go all around the lower castle as well. Take water, there is nowhere to buy any!

The underground bits are the best and there is also a beautiful little church carved into the hill (outside the bit you pay to see).

So this castle looks awesome at night, all lights and shadows. But try and visit!! Lack of signs, the place is locked up but no signs advising it’s closed, that would make sense! But good news is they display a sign showing €1.7 million of EU money was spent... keeping it closed whilst they party I think. For a country that depends on tourism they sometimes get it so very very wrong. A simple sign saying closed and why would have helped a million.

Read up on it before you go. Wonderful view of the Aegean Sea, the shores of Lesvos, and Turkey in the distance.

Went to front gate during what was suppose to be opening hours but was closed! Had to walk long distance along main street, took a left towards town park and continued walking hoping to find some way in. Finally saw ancient Greek & Roman artifacts along walkway and saw original main gate to castle with wrought iron gate open. Continued to another old gate with wrought iron gate open and found ticket kiosk. Asked attendant why main gate was close and she only smiled and shrugged her shoulders! Wonderful experience once you were inside with lots to see and learn. If you didn't have street map and took the extra time to walk a long distance to side entry you would have missed it! Someone needs to get their act together!

The castle is giant, you need a lot of time to see it all, but it hasn't so nice views as i expected it. Some parts are closed. If you are in Mytilene and if you have a lot of time it is maybe good to visit it, but if you don't go there, you won't miss anything. Price to go inside is 2 €/person.

The Mytilene fortress complex is located on a hill overlooking the city. The area is very large, about 25 ha. The first construction is from Justinian's time (approx. the year 560) and later became the feud of the Genoese Francesco Gattilusio. You can see today the walls of the fortress, the bath and school of Turkish times, the mausoleum of Musa Baba and many others. Visiting is recommended for lovers of culture and history. The views from above are spectacular.

I saw some comments refer to the Mytilini Castle as "a worthless pile of old stones." It is a medieval castle, half in ruins - that is written in any touristic guide you may open if you prep your trip to Mytilini.
It's definitely not worthless, though. I found it quite interesting and educational. The views from the castle are also worth the trip.
So slap on your sunscreen, put on your walking shoes and head on there first thing in the morning to avoid the heat.
Closed on Tuesdays.

Average experience. Ensure that you take water with you as there is no water available at the castle. Very nice history but not guided. There are a few artifacts but nothing too exciting.

This is a large and impressive castle which stands above the town. The underground crypts, the large water cistern and the Muslim baths and seminary were all extremely interesting and unexpected to have so many interesting things to explore. Well worth a visit.

A very large well preserved castle which is having plenty of renovations done to a good standard. The highlight of the visit for me was the underground crypt which was stunning. Allow plenty of time to get the full experience as it is a large site.
