The villa was absolutely beautiful from the gorgeous rooms and amazing view. Ms. Paulette was absolutely the best housekeeper you could ask for. The meals she prepared were all delicious and she was attentive to all of our personal needs. She has such a warm spirit and made our stay so wonderful. Everything in the villa was clean and well organized. Celebrating my 60th birthday in this awesome villa was one I will never forget. Thanks to Ms. Paulette and the owners for a wonderful experience. We hope to return soon. Simply the BEST!!!Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 4 October 2023

It kicked our butts, but we had a great time. Our caddies, Debbie and Hakeem were awesome and really helpful. They should just say they don’t want anybody but the people staying at the resort to play the course. That would save them the trouble of overcharging and being incredibly rude. When I brought up the online rates I was told that they don’t have anything to do with the website and they can charge what they want to people not staying at the resort. Rude and way overpriced. Never again. But I’m sure they don’t care.

The Tryall Golf Course is a wonderful 18 hole course that is almost three courses in one. It has a handful of waterside/vies holes, some fairly level ones and six that head up the side of the mountain and offer spectacular views.
This is a very good layout that requires some real shot making while offering some real risk/reward choices. Highlights include the waterside fourth, the seventh where the championship tees call for you to tee off through the arches of an aqueduct and the fourteenth which is spectacular downhill.
The course has generous ladies and senior tees which allows this challenging layout to be enjoyed by all. Bring some extra balls, as between the water and the relatively tight fairways, you may find you'll lose a few if you are not on target.

The course has 4 holes along the ocean and the caddies are very helpful in terms of course knowledge. The prices were reasonable and I didn't need a tee time. Played in under 3.5 hours!

Tryall Club – Montego Bay Jamaica
Since our trip to Jamaica took us to a resort West of Montego Bay this time (Grand Palladium) I finally had the excuse I had been waiting for to play Tryall. Previous Jamaican vacations in Ocho Rios and MoBay had provided me the pleasure of playing at Upton (Sandals GC) Ironshore, Cinnamon Hill and the White Witch and I did submit a trip report and photos of the latter 2 courses to this Forum a few years ago. Tryall is located about 30 minutes West of the MoBay airport by car.
I had previewed the Tryall Club on their web site well before we left for our Holiday and learned a lot about its storied past; the Johnny Walker World Championship Tournaments, big names like Norman and Faldo and Couples, celebrity residences abutting the course (Lennox Lewis) and a couple of signature golf holes that have been used in Print and Television advertisements for 30 years all added to my anticipation. The bus that took us to our resort passed the course upon our arrival, and I must say that the sunny green fairways and white sand bunkers did look mighty inviting.
Our hotel Guest Services representative called the course for me on a Tuesday to check into tee time availability for later in the week and was told that since I was a ‘single’ and it was a slow period for them (early December) that getting a tee off time would be ‘no problem mon’ – just show up and they would accommodate me. Boy did they ever, and then some!
I took a JUTA cab over to the golf course on Thursday December 10th at 7:45 a.m. so as to be on the course before the real heat of the day began – they say to try and go out either early in the morning or mid-afternoon as between 11:00 and 2:00 the sun is at its highest and hottest. I checked in at the Pro Shop, arranged for my greens fee ticket, rental clubs, caddy and cart and proceeded to the first tee area where I was to ‘select’ my rental clubs. The good news is that their rentals were pretty good quality – I had my choice of Titleist Cavity back irons or Cleveland Cavity Backs - both sets had Callaway Woods and utility clubs and there were 4 or 5 different shapes and weights of putter to select as well. I brought my own golf balls, tees, glove and shoes but the pro shop was very well stocked with supplies if you needed them.
I made my way over to the putting green to warm up a bit before I teed off (they do have a full driving range there as well in case you want to hit a few balls prior to teeing off) and was introduced to Glen, my caddy for the round. The next couple of hours were about to make poor Glen’s day pretty miserable as he was about to spend a lot of time in the woods, tall grass, marshy areas and trees, raking sand traps and looking for wayward golf shots. Glen carried himself as an ultimate professional that day, his course knowledge was extraordinary, he was acquainted with virtually every blade of grass on the greens, every subtle nuance and break, and made my morning at Tryall a real pleasure – thanks Glen!
As much as Glen made my day bearable, the real treat resulted from a little idle conversation at the first tee box about Tiger Woods extra-curricular activities of late. I got into a nice chat with a real gentleman who introduced himself to me simply as Robert. It turns out that Robert is the Pro at Tryall and when I asked him if he’d like to join me, he grabbed his clubs and off we went. What an opportunity – 18 holes of golf at one of my ‘bucket list courses’ and a playing lesson from the course pro at the same time…now I ask does it get any better than that?
The golf course was everything that I had hoped for and more – a beautiful combination of flat holes and hillside holes, ponds rivers and the ocean, with a few absolutely ‘to die for’ views (I have submitted a selection of photos for the Forum Moderator to post if he could) and a couple of truly memorable signature golf holes that I’ll take with me forever. Every tee that we stood on provided a view like that in an art gallery - hole after hole of gorgeous flowering shrubs and trees, tropical foliage, beautiful manicured fairways and in many cases the green-blue Caribbean in the distance. (actually OB left in one case!) The course was in excellent condition, especially when you consider the effect of the constant sun and heat beating down on the grass. The greens were in fine shape and held the ball well, broke true and provided some vicious pin placements. The tees were flat and well groomed as were the bunkers, and the rough was the toughest ‘birds nest’ type of grass I’ve ever seen. When your ball rolls in that stuff it literally disappears – without Glen, I’d have needed a dozen more golf balls than I brought with me!
From the Blue tees the course pays out to 6775 yards – we played the White tees and the 6238 yards certainly provided me with a great test of golf. Unlike a lot of resort golf courses, Tryall is tight and tough. There’s lateral OB on at least a dozen holes and even a slightly sprayed drive can put you deeply in jail – the forest, rough, hazards, or ocean ! It was a real treat to play 18 holes with Robert – being able to watch how the game is supposed to be played was definitely an added bonus! I don’t know how he had the patience to try and try to get me to into a full turn and weight shift, but he was the most gracious host and was a true pleasure to play with. Thanks for making this Canadian’s Tryall experience one that I’ll never forget, Robert!
From start to finish we completed the round in exactly three hours and I was back in the pool at the resort by 11:30. This may seem difficult to believe, but for the entire 3 hours that we were on the course, I saw exactly 1 other two-some. Quite simply, if you ever get the opportunity to play this wonderful Jamaican golf course seize it – you will not be disappointed. From hitting your drive through the ancient hand-made aquaduct to watching the ocean breezes alter the flight of your ball 20 yards back onto dry land on the signature par three 4th hole, this will be one golf course that you’ll never forget. Robert commented to me on several occasions that Tryall was the best test of golf in Jamaica…he was right.

From the the view to the layout Tryall golf course is a must play in jamaica. Now you have to play with a caddy, but he is well worth the money (ask for Flavors he is the best.) A lot of the tee boxes are elevated which can cross you up. On number 14 Flavors told me to keep the ball left so i blasted a massive drive left, and barley cleared some 70 foot tall native trees. When i left the tee box i thought i was well left, but when i got to the fariway i was on the right side, so please listen to your caddy! The greens are wicked and not kind, so they are very pga worthy. Again listen to your caddy!!! On the front 9 i had a birdie chance on 1,2,5,6,9 and missed them all. Two of them i missed by less then an inch. The head pro Michael is great guy and allowed my to start on the back nine because they had a couple of groups of four in front of me. If you're married take your wife even if she doesn't play because it is some of the best sight seeing you will do in jamaica.

I started writing this review on the first day of my vacation at Island House. I can honestly say this was the best trip I’ve ever had to Jamaica. You know why?
Because my wife could find nothing to complain about. LOL
Just kidding, kinda. But seriously here is a bit of background.
I visit Jamaica three or four times a year. I have experienced Jamaica at the micro level with locals who are friends and live in areas such as Falmouth, Hopewell, Bamboo and Mt. Salem. I’ve also had the macro level experience of staying at resorts such as Sandals, Secrets and Half Moon.
However, for the last few years we’ve stayed in Villas at either Round Hill or The Tryall Club which are truly in a different league.
I’ve never had a bad time in Jamaica so I can’t say anything negative about the other resorts but Island House at Tryall was the best all-around experience that we have had in Jamaica.
The majority of the kudos are due to the staff at Island House who are first class. Theresa, Alycia and Ralbert are a well-oiled machine and made a great team.
My wife is a culinary trained private chef with clients who are billionaires so when it comes to food it’s hard to impress her. I’ve never seen her enjoy Jamaican food at the level she did eating the amazing dishes Theresa prepared. Theresa was the first cook I’ve experienced at a villa who had created her own physical menu for us to choose from. We had Escovitch Lobster, Jerk Lobster, Curried Shrimp, Shrimp & Pasta, Oxtails, Jerk Chicken and of course Rice and Peas. Theresa’s cuisine was world class.
The overall care and service was excellent. Alycia was so attentive and must have ESP because before we could think of asking for anything she was there with it.
The grounds were exquisitely manicured by Ralbert, the gardener. But the term gardener doesn’t do him justice. Ralbert is an arboretum artist. He gave me a tour of the grounds and knew every tree, flower, fern, leaf and bird on the property.
The Villa was spotless and was always kept at ‘check in’ standards.
The furniture was modern and comfortable.
The air conditioner was perfect.
No matter how hot it was outside or around the private pool, the veranda and the ceiling fans created an amazingly cool alternative. It was like some kind of aerodynamic wizardry.
The Wi-Fi at Island House was extremely strong, definitely the best I’ve experienced on the island. If you’ve been to Jamaica more than a few times then you know Wi-Fi can be ‘iffy’ even at an expensive resort.
I was able to watch streamed video from different internet sites on my phone and laptop. My wife was constantly posting pictures on Instagram & other social media platforms without any issues.
The cable television was great too and even offered Netflix. We watched the Super Bowl on the large screen that was outside.
I give the staff and the Island Villa 10 stars. Just please don’t book it one of the four times a year that need it. LOL
And finally as a P.S.
This is from me to you, based on my personal experiences and knowledge coming to the island. Jamaica is an island rich in history, culture and historical significance. Its people are proud and dignified (rightfully so) and endowed with an intellect and a work ethic that any nation would be hard pressed to match. Jamaicans are also friendly and will bend over backwards to help you.
If you travel to the island, you need to understand that so treat the locals and staff with respect and please tip.

amazing view! i really not that good at golf but the caddy was so nice and helpful, i could play with the big boys with is help. when you get to the water wheel locals will try to sell you beautiful wood carvings, we always buy them because we feel like we should give back. there is a beer cart that comes around with drinks and snacks. if you run out of balls don't worry the ground keeper sells old balls for a good price . love it here and will go back.

How much is it for club hire and round of golf
Written 6 February 2018
Go to the Tryall Club website for current rates, click on golf along the top then tee times and rates. If you aren’t staying on property you will have a different rate. Caddies are mandatory, carts are optional + government tax and service. It isn’t cheap. It is a beautiful and challenging course.

Will be in Montego bay in February. Would like to know what the green fee is in February?
what is the fee for a caddy?
Cost of transport from secrets MB to the course?
Written 20 December 2014
I don't quite remember what the greens fee was as we were Tryall guests and we had a special rate. I feel like it was around $80/round per person, but that was also in August which is the off-season. We paid our caddie $50/round and it was well worth it. You are required to play with a caddie. Ask for Sugar - he's excellent and knows every inch of the course. Transportation each way from Montego Bay was around $60, I think. As other responders have said, you should check with your resort - they can give you the exact cost of everything. Tryall is beautiful and well worth the trip. Bring plenty of balls!
