    Ometepe - heaven on earth
Ometepe was the highlight of our trip. A beautiful island with excellent views, food, and people. We rented a bike for $40 for the day and the roads were perfect. We could have easily gotten something with less power. The foliage, the scenery, the serenity - it’s just stunning. I wish we would have stayed there longer! Definitely check out Playa Mangos and skip Ojo de Agua. It wasn’t worth it.

    Solo Traveling at Ometepe Island
One of the most unreal experiences traveling in Nicaragua. So many things to do in one place, the local people are the friendliest you can find and the visitors come from all over the world. Ideal to disconnect from the world and simply enjoy the moment. My first solo trip in Nicaragua and I totally recommend it. At Los Mangos Beach you can see the most memorable sunsets of your life, without exaggerating...

I think we were there at the end of dry season and things were a little bit crispy, but it was still absolutely beautiful. There is so much to explore, you could spend a whole week here. The highlight for us was renting scooters (rent from Willy’s!) and watching a sunset at Mango’s. The ferry is a breeze. I can’t wait to come back and try some of the hikes.

Stay away from the guys who rent scooters for $25. They will scam you. I have pictures below! I sought to rent two scooters for a day at the agreed-upon rate of $25 each. A deposit of $110 was taken. Upon returning the scooters the next day, the manager falsely accused us of damaging already compromised scooters. Thankfully, we had video evidence to counter this claim. Additionally, they inaccurately asserted a two-day rental period, withholding the deposit without refunding the remainder. Despite requesting a receipt, none was provided.

Taking the matter to the authorities, the police confirmed suspicions of a scam, revealing that the actual scooter rate on Ometepe Island is $15 for a 24-hour period. It appears we were deceived from the outset.

I have posted images of the scammers. Their store location is right next to the ferry ticket office at Moyogalpa port.

If you look for a reliable and cheap taxi on the island ometepe, I can recommend you Gerald Tijerino. I traveled together with three friends. We paid 5 dollars each for drives that took about 30-40 minutes. He also offers scooter rentals for 24h at a rate of 15 dollars. Motorbikes are avaible at 20 dollars for 24 hours. Gerald usually replied within minutes when communicating over WhatsApp and was always very kind and helpful.

Ometepe is really a great place. It is remote and more rural feeling than Granada or San Juan Del Sur but in a good way. It has more of a small town vibe. A little slower pace with very kind and friendly people. It's an island vibe for sure and there's very little in the way of commerce going on. The scenery is gorgeous as well with a handful of easily accessed activities and things to do. I'm glad we went and I'm sure anyone else going would feel the same.

Our son visited the Island a few years ago and highly recommended it to us. We finally made it there and spent twelve days roaming around hanging out with locals. The island is very friendly and if you stay more than a few days you will make lots of Nico friends. The entire island has a laid back atmosphere set against stunning beauty and gorgeous beaches. We enjoyed the towns as much as the more rural areas. We hiked to the top of a volcano, soaked in a beautiful mineral pool and walked beautiful beaches. You can see why we think it’s a little corner of paradise!Would love to go back and spend more time.

You can't really say you have visited Nicaragua without going to ometepe. I went to cascada san Ramón and hiked volcano Concepción. I think that three nights and three days is the ideal, or more if you like a more relaxing, laid-back lifestyle.
