Nice stop during visiting Vrhnika - even if you dont know anything about the greatest Slovenian writer Ivan Cankar who used to live in the wooden house which stood there more than a century ago. This is oportunity to learn more about him and life from the beginning of 20th century. Interesting reconstruction of rooms and life from the past times and info about the writer. Museum is just a few meters from the main road in the old part of Vrhnika. Open from april to the end of october. There is a guiding tour included in small entrance fee. All in all nice museum but small

Stumbled upon this by chance on a morning walk. Thoroughly enjoyed the short tour that gave a real sense of the life and times of Cankar, his family and Slovenia at that time.

Although I was travelling thru Vrhnika many times I have never managed to visit Cankar’s house. Ivan Cankar is considered as the greatest Slovenian writer, so this time I finally decided to stop in Vrhnika and visit the house. It only consists of three small rooms, so visitors usually don’t spend a lot of time there. The guide was very knowledgeable and he told us many interesting facts, jokes and other things about Cankar and his family. Well worth a visit, especially for Slovene visitors.

Famous writer Ivan Cankar was born in a poor house in the upper part of Vrhnika, not far from small church of St. Lenart. Original house disappeared in a fire when he was three years old. So, this is just a memorial house with black kitchen, living room and two smaller rooms with documents and books. Without a guide it is nothing special. House is closed during winter season. When it is open, you will pay small entrance fee. There is no parking, so find place for your car in the lower part of the city. There is strange sculpture of Ivan Cankar behind the corner. It is a shame to have such sculptures near the memorial house.

Cankar's house has very little to offer. I guess it's nice if you have no idea who he was, because a guide can tell you a bit more about his life. However, there is nothing authentic to see inside since everything burned in a fire. The objects you will see were donated by the neighbours.

This is an old house, which is the birthplace of one of the greatest Slovenian writers, Ivan Cankar. It is a significant attraction: black cuisine. In the kitchen, the stove is in the open, so the whole room quite black. A very interesting thing.
