A tropical island in the heart of the Alps - A tropical paradise where you would least expect it: at the foot of some of Switzerland's most impressive mountains. The "Tropenhaus" in the town of Frutigen takes advantage of renewable energy from an unusual source to breed Siberian sturgeon for caviar, as well as grow bananas, papayas and kumquats. This one-of-a-kind centre offers visitors the opportunity to learn and experience - and even taste - how all this is possible in the Alps!
Geothermal power, renewable energy, aquaculture and sustainable food production can all be seen and experienced under one roof at the Tropenhaus. A tour of the centre includes a walk through the greenhouses with their flourishing tropical fruit trees and exotic plants, as well as a stop at the fishponds to watch impressive sturgeon of all sizes. The unique, renewable energy concept of the Tropenhaus takes advantage of the warm water that springs from the nearby Lotschberg rail tunnel. Additionally, solar panels, hydroelectricity, and biomass are used to heat and power the building. The special atmosphere and architecture also make the Tropenhaus an ideal setting for events of all kinds.
Alpine first - caviar and kumquats
The Tropenhaus in Frutigen is considered a pioneer in land-based aquaculture. The annual production of the rich sturgeon meat amounts to 18 tons. The centre has also ushered in a new era in the history of caviar production. A tour of the greenhouses reveals an astonishing array of fruit trees, exotic spices and plants.
Dining - tropical discoveries
The fruits grown on the premises, as well as the centre's sturgeon meat, are served up as fresh, authentic dishes in the Tropenhaus's very own restaurants - the
"Terrasserie" and "Oona - the restaurant". There is also a selection of other regional specialties on offer.
