We stopped by in mid-September and found the gate closed with no indication of opening times. We would have loved to have seen the castle, but as far as I can tell from googling it, it is only open once or twice a year. There were web pages advertising special day trips from Livorno to the castle; these trips included a tour and a luncheon at the castle. I think it deserves a higher rating than 3 stars on those special days it is open, but chose that value as a compromise in order to post this notice that it is normally closed.

worth visiting. It is private castle which has been recently open to visit. The view is astounding. It shoudl be visited in a day of stong sea wind to have the feeling of being on a ship in the middle of the stromy sea

This is my second visit to Sonnino, though this was for 4 nights, rather than my previous day trip last fall. That probably says enough, only this time I brought 7 friends, all who are extremely seasoned travelers. Like me, they all adored this place. The centuries old Castello (castle) is authentic and steeped in history, including being the residence of a former Prime Minister of Italy. The clock tower, the courtyard, the reception rooms and bedrooms all reflect the owners' attention to detail and their goal of combining comfort with beauty, history and style. Their winery has award winning wines which can be enjoyed in a tasting room/bistro and bought on the premed is, in addition to their own olive oils, honeys, and private recipe biscotti. They are also renowned for their Vin Santo, a totally beautiful desert wine. This is just the place for someone looking to get a sense of a high level of Italian lifestyle, offered with warmth, pride and many many smiles. When you are in touch, please send my love to its owner, Caterina. In addition to the rooms in the Castello, she also has several B and B rooms. This would be an ideal place for friends, family or a couple.
