Awesome views but Scarry if you are afraid of heights, the views through the tunnel are breath taking.

The tunnel itself is fascinating because it has a number of large windows allowing quick glimpses of the main canyon. In addition to the tunnel itself, the terrain on either side is fabulous.

Watching the movie about the creation of the tunnel, even though the danger was downplayed, was really amazing. That highway is an absolute marvel and, now having gone back and forth, saw different things each way that stood out even more.

We drove through the tunnel coming from Hurricane and going to Mt. Carmel. As we were driving up the switchback we could see cutouts in the mountain wall above us and wondered what they were for. Turns out it was a cutout on the side...More

I didn't know ahead of time about this tunnel. . .it was incredible! For sure the most awesome tunnel I've ever traveled through, and the scenery on either end truly outstanding.

It's not the tunnel, it is the whole road!!!! Go early morning if you want to have the vistas to yourself, changing after every corner you take. Watch out for the wildlife as well, we saw loads; California Condor, dear, chipmunks, rattle snakes, lizards, etc....More

When I encounter tunnels, I am always struck by the notion of what alternatives the engineers faced when they chose this particular route. The labor and costs, especially in the depression were more manageable then, but still 11/2 miles through a mountain with a grade...More

It was one of the longest tunnels I've ever driven through, but it wasn't unbearable at all. The numerous "Windows" along the tunnel gave us some peaks of the beautiful mountain. I really love this drive.
