We loved this entire experience. From the movie and visitor center exhibits, to the cabin Theodore Roosevelt used, to the magnificent drives, the many geological formations, the WILD HORSES, the prairie dog communities, and the bison; we were mesmerized. We were thankful this great park is preserved for our education and experience. Highly recommend the 36 mile scenic drive in... More

We really loved the South Unit at this national park. Visitor's center had a small theater, museum, gift shop, map of park, and restrooms. Can drive the scenic byway or hike any of the numerous trails. Very few cars and people which was great...we could drive at our own pace and enjoy the fresh air and quiet. Saw lots of... More

We visited here on a Thursday (20 October) in October. Fine weather and few visitors. Lots of interesting animals and no rush to move along or out of the main roadway. Got to watch mule deer, wild horses, bison, coyote, and loads of prairie dogs. The most prairie dogs we've seen in any area here in the West. The loop... More

A good place to buy you entry fee for the Theodore Roosevelt National Park drive, see his cabin and museum and buy some souvenirs. There are clean bathroom facilities and water fountains to fill your water. The original cabin is situated here along with 2 original TR items -- his writing desk and trunk. Look for the Maltese cross embedded... More

The Scenic Loop Drive in the South Unit is just breathtaking! The wildly corrugated cliffs, steep, convoluted gullies, dome-shaped hills, the layers of rock and sediment that form multicolored horizontal stripes are spectacular! During our drive we saw lots of prairie dogs, elk, buffalo, deer and several wild horses. Be sure and take time to watch the video in the... More

This Unit is lovely and majestic. Disappointed that there were no trail brochures for the Coal Vein trail to go w/ markers but on our day there was a huge bison not 10feet from the trail. He munched the grass while we bushwhacked into the grass to give him comfort that we were no threat, and he never even raised... More

I agree with the reviews, that the South Unit may not be as highly dramatic in its scenery as the North Unit, but it's a truly amazing place. The National Park Visitor Center makes a good place to stop and get an overview of the park and the Cottonwood Campground is located in a beautiful area of the park.

A great place to experience the bad lands without getting eaten by buzzards. You may even see a bison. Easy drive after stopping at the visitor center. Have a good breakfast and bring your water bottles and camera. Stop and walk the nature hikes and take it all in. Experience the stars at night ,

This is a great park and the wildlife abounds. We were up close and personal with Bison from the get go and live the prairie dog towns the most. Beautiful vistas everywhere, sometimes rugged, sometimes peaceful, and slumps are sooo interesting. Make the trip to the north unit too though! We stopped at all 3 visitor centers too. TR, best...
