We did the Old Rag Loop trail. Basically its 3 miles up, pretty steep elevation gain of a couple thousand feet. You hit a few false peaks but the views there are just as nice. At the first major false peak you hit the rock scramble. Basically its like 15 minutes of bouldering to get up to the actual peak.... More

We go all over hiking and recently visited the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Skyline Drive is amazing, well maintained with terrific views. Me, my husband and our two teenaged sons hiked Old Rag on a Saturday morning. We woke up early and arrived ready to hike just before 7:00 am. The parking lot had 30+ cars already. We started out... We took our kids, 10, 12,14,16. This is a strenuous hike but doable even for very put of shape people as long as you are prepared with food, lots of water and lots of time! We did not make it all the way to the summit as it was crazy busy and there was actually a line at part of... More

Old Rag Mountain is technically on the far east side of Shenandoah National Park, so if you're going to get the entrance and trailhead, it's best to head south from Sperryville instead of entering Shenandoah NP's entrance. The hike itself is intense, will take you the better part of a day (allow for a minimum of six hours. Anyone who... More

I'm in mid 50s, in decent shape. This trail was a great test of your stamina, endurance and condition. Having said that, it's definitely doable. Went with two college buddies - we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Some parts more crowded than others, but there are lots of spaces of peace and quiet. The views from the top are amazing. Can't... More

I love Old Rag mountain. My grandfather lives near the base of the mountain, so I have been hiking it for years. No matter how many times I do it I the views still take my breath away (literally and figuratively haha) My favorite time of year is when all the leaves start to change their colors.

We hiked to the Old Rag summit from the Berry Hollow parking area and found the 5.4 mile (round trip) hike to be very fun. Parking in Berry Hollow is very limited but the good news is that if the parking lot is full you can still do the Whiteoak Falls / Canyon hike. Overall, a great hike to do... More

Old Raggedy Mountain is probably one of the best hikes in the Shenandoah National Park. Views of many miles extend in all directions from the summit. After several miles of hiking through the forest, the trail breaks out into gigantic boulder fields that you have to scramble over. Take your time and look before you leap! This hike has been... I read reviews all over the place from moderate to hard. I wouldn't take small children through the rocks but I saw some probably as young as 8. The hike is not really as hard as some claimed but I would caution climbing the rocks in the rain. You can help younger or older people in your group navigate through... More

Old Rag is a staple of Shenandoah National Park and probably the most challenging hike in the area. The loop is about 9 miles and includes a lot of bouldering at the top, which is strenuous but very fun. We started at about 9am on a Saturday, and the trail was already crowded in the first few miles. The top... More
