Be prepared to do a lot of scrambling over rocks. This is probably the most difficult hike I have ever done. But, the view at the top is absolutely worth it. If you want to hike the entire circuit make sure you are in good shape. If you don't want to do the rock scramble you can hike up the... More

The summit of Old Rag Mountain is unique because of its geology and its location. This bald area of huge boulders is really the eroded away root of an ancient mountain that once stood several times higher than the Rocky Mountains of Colorado do today. Old Rag also "stands a little apart" from the rest of the Blue Ridge Mountain... More

We went on a busy weekend morning. It made our hike a little slower, but it's nice to help or have help in a couple spots.

Climbing Old Rag is a pleasant day hike for some, a rite of passage for others...regardless, a trip to the summit offers fantastic views of the Shenandoah Valley. The total distance of the hike from parking lot and back is just over nine miles. If you do not dawdle and if the trails and rock scrambles are not crowded, you... More

I'm a fairly fit individual, and this was a challenging hike. I walked it pretty quickly though, so if you take it easy it may not be as exhausting. The rock scramble was a blast (I wouldn't recommend for kids under 10)! Get there early to beat the crowds. 2 x peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, a 32 oz Gatorade,... More

My friend and I went to Old Rag on a weekday. It was spectacular! Very little people. It did storm a bit, but up in the mountains the storms pass so quickly. This hike can be done by novices, but it does require some athleticism. Rock scrambles and the view were definitely the highlight. Be sure to bring lots of... More

Knowing hundreds can cover this mountain on a pretty weekend, we chose a weekday at the beginning of November and were rewarded with very few other hikers. Could not have asked for a better day. Loved the strenuous boulder climbing (Make sure you check out photos, but anyone in good shape can do this). Also can be done from other... More

We did I the scrambling route on Old Rag on a warm late September day. The rock is perfect granite and the scrambling sections have some 'interesting ' moves on them though none of them are in dangerous positions. Very very enjoyable.

My friends and I did this hike Veterans Day Weekend. Started at 0800, did the whole poop and ended about 1430. You have to be in fairly good shape to hike this mountain all the way. There are several places where you have to use upper body strength and squeeze through tight places. Plenty of rocks to scramble towards and... More
