This was a quick stop. Underneath the rock is a great place to make a family photo. You can climb up on top of the rock if you want to, but it is a little treacherous.

Lovely spot inside the National Park. Very picturesque rock and also the scenic view from the spot is breathtaking. Would come back

First time through, June, 1948, when the road went under the rock. That's our 1935 Studebaker parked on the side. My Mom took the picture; I was 4.

One of the first things you will see in the foothills is Tunnel Rock where the NPS had to move the road. Originally, the road ran under the rock until cars and trucks began to get bigger. Many campers left a permanent scar on the underside of the rock. This prompted a new road and created a new attraction. We stopped to get a picture and to walk through it. It is fun in the foothills.

We stopped and took a picture. It's cool, but we spent too much time here trying to get a clean picture (parking, crowds, etc.). My advice...take a good look as you drive by. There are way better things to see in the park.

It is interesting that this natural occurrence is along the road where you can pull off and snap a photo - but it is probably repeated numerous times throughout rocky valleys across the country in areas we can't drive by. So if you want to see the southern end of Sequoia, which is very different from north and central, include Tunnel Rock, Hospital Rock and the Foothills Visitor Center on your southern sojourn to make it worthwhile. Be aware that the drive is windy so allow sufficient time.

It's fun to stop by, especially it's close to the entrance of the park. Finding a parking spot is the trick.

This is a quick little stop located shortly after the entrance to the park. Fun to see but definitely not on the level of the beauty that lies ahead within the park. Likely a one and done for us.

Nice spot on your way in
Nothing much more than what you see in this picture but it'll make a nice memory with you standing on the top of the big rock

What year did the road change to go around the tunnel rock

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think around 1999 or 2000. The park widen the whole generals highway. The pavement looks to be about that age as well.
