Great hike, accessible from Bear Lake Trailhead, about 9.6 miles roundtrip from parking. Start early since parking fills up by 7amish during season, plus you want to avoid possibility of afternoon thunderstorms since you could be very exposed. Steep climb as you get towards the top, still a small snowfield in July, sunny but very windy the day we were... More

We hiked up Flattop Mountain to get to Hallett Peak. The elevation and steepness of the trail did cause me stop to take a few breaks along the way (although my hiking partner from Houston was fine). But I never felt like the hike wasn't something I couldn't complete. About half the trail is above the tree line and we... More

I really enjoyed my hike to Flattop Mountain and then continued on the Hallett Peak. Flattop Mtn is about 9 miles round trip winding through trees, rocks, and open fields. There may be snow before mid July and after October. Start by 7 to get off the top by noon when the thunderstorms roll into the RMNP. Continue on the... More

It is a strenuous hike for visitors (like me) but the views at the top are breathtaking! If you are up for a challenge, do it.

The Flattop Mountain Trail begins at Bear Lake Parking area. You wind your way through aspen, eventually coming to an overlook where you can look down upon Emerald Lake. If you are going to the top of Flattop, be aware that there are many "false summits" but once on top, the view is 360 degrees of beauty. This is a... More

Was rated as extremely difficult by a ranger I asked for information. The trail is indeed a bit rugged and climbing all the time. Do not do this as a first hike unless you really want altitude sickness. On top of Flat Top the view is OK but for the ultimate experience (without technical challenges) continue 45 minutes up to... We went on this trail in order to get to the summit of Hallett Peak. Great trail, tremendous overlooks over various lakes, and a not too rocky path. Lots of switchbacks and traversing a snowfield to get to the summit.

This was a fantastic hike to be a centerpiece of our short time in Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park. We visited 4 years ago with our extended family and kids, and did other hikes and drives, but only made it a little way up then (June 2011), due to lots of snow and limited time. This time, we were determined to... More

This is an excellent hike! I loved it! A lot of people labeled this as strenuous and I was even thinking to NOT do it the day before but I'm glad I did. It was not strenuous @ all. I would say moderate, maybe, but this was excellent. I do not think that the elevation up was bad. It was... More

This is a difficult trail to hike, over 10 miles round trip and over 3,000-ft vertical, so make sure that you are up to it. I have done this hike 4 times and gone to different locations once I was on top. I have hiked further to get tot he top of Hallett Peak for more exercise. I have also... More
