We drove the North Cascades Highway in mid-Sept on a weekday and the weather was just perfect. The road is winding and quite a slow-go, but remember, you're taking this drive for the scenery, not to make good time! The rolling, vegetation-covered mountains and steep-sided...More

Road construction. Drivers don't like it. Nearby homeowners grimace at the nearby whispers of improvements and environmental concerns. From the time someone gets that initial idea of some transportation enhancement in their mind until the inevitable project comes to full fruition, many, many years can...More

Places not to be missed are the Diablo Lake Overlook, Washington Pass Observation Area, and the hikes such as the Rainy Lake (easy), Lake Ann (has some blow-downs), or Blue Lake (longer) hikes. Food and running water are not easily available.

Great views of the Skagit River and surrounding mountains. Camp at Newhalem or Colonial Creek campgrounds. Hiking trails vary in difficulty and elevation gain, so you can find something for all fitness levels.

We came across border from Canada to visit this US NP, and are pleased we did despite 13 hr round trip. This is a fine scenic highway with snowcapped mountains, sparkling turquoise lakes and rivers ,and high winds!

I don't know for sure as we drove through, but I would believe that if you follow Route 20 (the Northern Cascades Highway) you will spot the towns where people are likely to stay. Also, will you want to stay to the west of... More
