Decent trail, but with all the lava you can get turned around easily

Recent activity in the park has resulted in major portions of this trail being marked off limits to tourists.

We did this trail in February 2011. It was one of the easier ones for distance. You hike along areas that have been totally devastated by lava flows and yet tiny sprigs of vegetation can be seen trying to break out and thrive again. The cinder cone is just like the shape of a hill and it too had vegetation... More

Parking spot near Devastation trail was easy to find. The trail took us about half hour. The trail starts and ends with tropical forest, with devastation hill in the middle. We are amazed to see little plants grow there.

Compare to the other walks, this one is a bit below, hence why the rating. However, you can stick to the first section only, take some photos and move on. That way, it'll only take you a few minutes. The end that takes you back to Kilauea iki isn't worth it to me, especially if you're just coming from kilauea

This short trail takes you through a landscape shaped by a volcanic eruption. As it is quite easy to hike, it is particularly suited for families with children.

We parked in the car park and walked out the trail which is quite short and easy to do. We then used this as a base to walk the nearby dormant crater, which was awesome.

While this is more or less a "should do" starter trail when you visit, the only real payoff is a view of the crater, which you can actually drive to. The trail takes you near the large cinder cone from the last major eruption. The trail itself is pretty flat and gets a little windy. So, if you want to... More

You can enter the trail in two places, doesn't really matter where, once you get to the mountains of what looks like pile of gravel you have seen all there is to see and you don't need to go all the way along the path. Don't get me wrong the pile of gravel is strangely quite interesting and for a... More

This is an easy paved, out & back walk that allows you to see regrowth of plants in cinders from the 1959 eruption. Interesting to see the changes over years of visits. Also good to see up close a different kind of lava (cinders) than may have seen elsewhere. Not as dramatic as some other views but accessible and interesting.

Went before the big eruption, and then after, the roads we'd driven on were covered by lava. Amazing indeed!
