Looking for the latest things that the volcano has done, go to Kalapana. You'll find yourself excited and completely satisfied seeing and exploring places that the volcano has destroyed. You would also see the actual flow of the lava and a huge steam in the ocean created by lava as it drops into the water.

If you want to see lava pouring into the ocean in the most impressive display, get yourself to the Kalapana viewing platform NOW!! We went on February 7th after being turned away due to vog the night before. We are so glad we tried again and so glad we made the 6 mile journey by bike. Took my 8 &... More

We rented bikes from one of the several vendors at the end of the road and rode the 4 miles RT to the end. It was hot and breezy in the mid morning when we went so it was a little grueling even though we consider ourselves in good shape. Coming back was much harder into the wind! The view... More

I would not recommend this trip if you aren't somewhat fit and good on your feet. Be realistic about your own abilities. Some people managed to get themselves out there but because of weight, age or mobility issues, they looked very uncomfortable, and they still had to get all the way back in the dark. We rented bikes (rather than... More

We wanted to see the latest lava flow coming from the Pu'u O'o on the eastern border of the National Park (East Rift Zone). Day one we tried from the end of the Crater Road. Eight miles one way - The heavy wind pushing the toxic steam in our direction and rainy weather. No way. Day two we tried from... More

This was super cool. We biked to see the sunset over the lava entry. Rental bikes are in the parking lot. Expect to pay about $20 per bike. Mountain bikes are the best bet for the gravel. My husband got a heavy comfort bike and he struggled the whole way. It's not a very hilly trip. But it's long. I... More

After spending a few hours exploring Volcanoes National Park, we wanted to see some lava where it entered the ocean at the Kamukona ocean entry. There are 2 choices by land. View it from the west by heading to the end of Chain of Craters Rd, approximately 45 minute drive from the Visitors Center. Once you reach the Holei Sea... More

There is not much out by Kalapana but the lava entry into the ocean is more than worth the trip. There is not an easy way to get there from Volcano National Park but don't miss the lava hitting the ocean and exploding.

Devastation and beauty and the only way to describe it. Make sure you visit the "Kingdom of Hawaii" for some great food, wonderful people, and lovely local art. The best part of Kalapana though has got to be the bike rental and 4 mile ride out to the lava flowing into the ocean. A must see for everyone!

My son (10y old) and I drove to Kalapana to see the lava flow into the see and we were not disappointed. We drive from The west side of the island and it took 2 hrs to get there. We chose to go at the end of the day so we could see the lava at night. We arrived at... More
