Definitely visit the Thomas Jaggar museum to checkout the lava coming out of the crater. The lava tube is worth the visit and while long, the Chain of Craters road is an excellent scenic (scenes being of solidified lava and craters) drive.

We planned a full day & a half, which was great. First day we enjoyed lunch at Volcano House, then meandered through the Steam Vents walk, Lava Tubs, Ha'akulamanu (Sulphur Banks), Jaggar Museum & art shop. We also went back at night to the Jaggar Museum and saw the lava glow in the dark. All well worth our time. Our... More

I go back often to the Big Island just in hopes of getting close to some real Lava. Almost did last trip but it was flowing on private land and just could not pay $200 for a "tour"

Great adventure for the whole family. Be sure to bring a jacket as the temperature drops in the higher elevations. Don't pass up the information centers in the park as there are great displays and a movie that will giv you a better understanding of the volcano.

We've been twice, once in 2012 and in November 2016. In this last visit, we worked hard to track down where the lava flows were. We started at the visitor center and asked where we could see lava. First choice was the Jagger museum. We went there and we could see the Halema'uma'u crater in the Kilauea caldera. There was... More

I give the park five stars, but three when visiting with a two year old and a toddler. We were limited in what we could do - no eight mile roundtrip to see flowing red lava, and no drive to the rim of a 14K foot volcano. There aren't many great family friendly hikes. We did see two active, bubbling... More

One of our most favorit-est places on the island. Expect rain- it happens there a lot! The Thurston Lava Tube is a must see! We always bar-b-que there, but there are restaurants and little stores. And they have a bowling alley- which makes for a happy family! Lots of great hiking. Prepare to be amazed at all of this beauty!

we went in pouring cold rain. we could see lava splashing at the jagger museum - amazing! there was a ranger talking about the volcano and he was great. The visitor center was small and crowded, everyone trying to stay a little dry. We then went to the lava tube and that was amazing. we ended up a little too... More

We were very lucky to see lava from the Jagger Museum! Definitely worth the visit. One lane highway makes for a long trip from Kona or Hilo. Entry fee to the park is good for a week. Lots to see and learn!
