We've been up to the Haleakala summit twice, once in early morning, and once at late afternoon. Both were awesome. Mornings are really cold, with ice prisms growing out of the soil and sun reflecting off the clouds that lie below you. Sunrise visits have gotten so popular that the park service requires advance reservations. Driving up the long, winding... More

So we set out at 4.15am from Kihei giving ourselves ample time to make the 6.02am sunrise. We passed a sign that said something about a reservation.... what?? Continued our windy, climbing dark accent to get to the State Troopers booth to be told that we needed a "reservation" to be in the National Park between 3am-7am. There was limited... More

We travelled to the Haleakala Park early morning to catch the sunrise but we missed it because we didn't read the 'fine print' about getting a permit to enter the park. However we entered the park after sunrise and we were not disappointed. The view from about the clouds was spectacular !! Well worth the trip from Kihei.

This should not be missed. The volcanic rock and the beautiful views here are so peaceful and unlike anything I have ever seen. If you can do it, get there at sunrise. Everyone is very quiet and the anticipation is magical. It's cold when you first arrive and then the sun bursts through and it almost immediately gets warm. So... More

Most people recommend going for the sunrise but if you are not one to get up at 3 am like us go during the day. It is less crowded and warm. It still has great views almost looks like someone painted the area.

it is a long drive to Haleakala crater. no way were we going for the sunrise thing. the views are incredible especially the drive up to the crater where you go through a forest with redwoods. at 10,000 feet it gets cold so bring a jacket. On the way there its worth it to visit Makawa (SP?) city. the kids... More

The summit is the most beautiful spot I have ever been to! The view is breathtaking. We went in the middle of the day, it was hot enough to be in sleeveless shirts. The air was pure, clean and the sun shone from a cloudless sky, the most beautiful blue I have ever seen. I will definitely go back!

We didn't want the early crowd or dark drive down so went mid morning and was not disappointed. The drive was actually not bad at all, the only issue being the groups of cyclists coming down from the summit but once you got past them all ok. Pity they don't have a bike only path, which would be safer for... More

We rode our bikes up to the top of this massive peak which dominates the south end of Maui. The views on the way up were amazing but the real treat was at the top. We could see the Big Island in the distance. Felt like we were on top of the world! Fantastic!
