It's a little out of the way. But close to Cherokee and you get to drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway a bit. When we went we passed lots of vehicles. Seemed to be quite popular which the scenery proved to be true. I would bring a picnic!

The "primitive" road from Heintooga to Round Bottom is exactly that - primitive. It is a good drive for anyone looking for adventure beyond what the Blue Ridge Parkway provides. The road is full of potholes, repaired washouts with gravel filled in, and sharp rocks protruding from the roadbed. There is enough scenery to keep passengers attention, but the driver... More

We're not big hikers, so this gravel road, that was not mowed, was perfect. Lots of trees and flowers, which consisted of yellow daisies, bee balm, and tiger lilies when we were there in July. However, since it is not mowed, you would find different perennials in bloom depending upon what month you visited. There were also walls of rhododendrons... More

Camped at Balsam Mountain campground. From Cherokee take Blue Ridge Parkway and left on Balsam Mountain Road. Road has lots of scenic pull off and picture ops. Late July drive and I saw plenty of turkey and a family of elk! For the adventurous type, follow the unpaved one way primitive road at the end. There is a sign. It's... More

We were looking for a gravel road off the beaten path to drive our jeep on and Balsam Mountain Road was perfect. The drive took us about two hours and we encountered a few other cars on our drive. Don't forget to bring a map!

Take the Blue Ridge Parkway East from Cherokee. Heintoga Ridge Road is the road to take to Balsam Mountain. The Balsam Mountain Road is right by the picnic area. I had to do some fast talking to get my husband to drive it! It looks & IS rough. Basically a gravel road around & down the mountain. It's one way... More

Yes, it's a *primitive* dirt/gravel road. That is the whole point of the road. To get OFF the pavement and into the wilderness. Although it is possible to to take regular passenger cars on the road, it's really not meant for them. It's meant for higher ground clearance vehicles. It's has bumps, puddles, dips and ruts....and is perfect for my... More

The road leading to this one is lovely. We were a little hesitant to do go on to Balsam Mountain Road because it's one way so once you're on, you have to keep going. It is an unpaved road but we had no problems driving it in our Honda Civic. It will be bumpy but if you drive slowly and... More

This mountain road is a bit off the beaten track for most. The drive to get to Balsam Mountain Road starts off on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Depending on the day the drive can be difficult due to dense fog. If there is no fog the views can be simply breathtaking. We have driven this road many times over the last... More
