The Lookout Studio is near the trailhead for the Bright Angel Trail. After our hike on the trail we visited the Lookout Studio. There is a nice gift shop inside. However, the real draw for the Studio are the lookout terraces that have magnificent views of the Canyon. We were able to get terrific pictures and to admire the expansive vistas of the Canyon from here. I recommend a stop at the Lookout Studio.

This is a small gift shop with a viewing area of the Canyon. The gift shop has much the same as we’ve seen before. But it's quite a building perched on the edge of the Grand Canyon. The gift shop is pretty typical. The viewing area is quite nice. Standing on the deck with the rock building at your back harkens back to a day when Grand Canyon tourism was young.

And the view - magnificent.

It’s special today. And even more so when you think about how 60 years ago how difficult it was to get to the south rim. And then to build the look out. And then just sit and take in the beauty. Simply amazing. Make sure to take the walking tour.

Lookout Studio tells some history of the pioneers that first settled in the Grand Canyon Area, has a vantage point with 270 degree view of the area below and some souvenirs for sale. It accessible from Bright Angel Point. Only a short walk from where the bus stop, it is a must-see if you are near Grand Canyon Visitor Center.

Architect Mary Jane Colter designed this building, and it's worth a stop if you like her work. It's basically a gift shop now, but there are some great views out the back.

This small historic building designed by Mary Colter, who designed many of the historic buildings at the Grand Canyon, is perched of the edge of the canyon and it is worth a moment to take a look as you pass it along the Rim Trail.

Nice views. Interesting structure on the side of the Canyon. Small shop inside. Go inside and also out on the lookout decks for views of the Canyon.

Ignore the gift shop inside (there are better one elsewhere nearby on the South Rim) and instead, enjoy the attractive building and the views.

Lookout Studio was built by the Sante Fe RR in 1914 and was a photography studio to compete with the nearby Kolb Studio (see separate review). It is one of several buildings at the Grand Canyon that were designed by architect Mary Colter, including the Bright Angel Lodge, Hermit's Rest, Hopi House, Phantom Ranch, and Desert View Watchtower. Lookout Studio uses Colter's signature rustic style of jagged native rocks to blend in with the the Grand Canyon. it is located at the very edge of the Canyon, and presents a very dramatic view!

You have to walk through the gift shop to get to the observation areas, but it is definitely worthwhile. The views are outstanding as you are perched right over the Canyon.

We enjoyed this stop. You can either stay on the outside landing of the lookout or venture down to two separate levels. We could see a condor on the nest, but not in flight.

We loved being at the Studio to see an unobstructed view of the sunrise, especially seeing it after watching the sunset at Hopi Pt. the night before. The sky is just magic, filling with colors of the early morning.
