Word of mouth has that the more remote, harder to get to and therefore less crowded North Rim offers a more authentic Canyon experience and better views. However, there is no bus service on this rim and it is closed during the winter.

The South Rim offers much better views. Don't get me wrong - the view here on the North Rim is awe inspiring; but it is not worth any extra driving if the South Rim is closer. If you want solitude, just hike a little way...More

After entering the gate at the North Rim, head immediately to Point Imperial (the first left off the main road, then at the 'Y', take a left-well signed). You'll eventually come to a parking lot with a SPECTACULAR view, with very little, if any, crowds.

The North Rim seemed long and narrow to get there, but a sight worth seeing. If you go through the lodge you can sit in a chair and just be in the moment. Every place you look is a photo that will stay with you...More

The Grand Canyon is a "Must See," but for those of us afraid of heights, some of the trails are a bit unnerving, especially when young children are part of the family. The dining room at the Lodge has a magnificent view of the Canyon....More

I loved the remote beauty of the North Rim. Not too crowded. In fact, several hikes we were the only people for miles. The elevation is no joke - you will experience shortness of breath if you live in lower elevations! The heat wasn't bad...More

Grand Canyon is a gorgeous vista that is so very peaceful and humbling. North Rim is cooler in temps compared to the South rim and more about nature - not a swarm of tourists here. There are cabins right up to the edge of the...More

I had been to the South Rim, but this was my first visit North. It absolutely exceeded my expectations. The views are incredible, and while we did not hike, we found easy car access to the points. Honestly, I think the panorama is better on...More

We live fairly close to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, so we visit it more than the North RIm. But we much prefer the North Rim! The road is closed at least half of the year, but when it's open it is well...More

We were on a road trip so had a specific route which meant we had come from Las Vegas and stayed in hurricane so we could visit Bryce Canyon , and Zion national park. Both of which were fantastic. .

None of the trails on the North Rim are all that strenuous till you attempt to go into the canyon. But there is plenty to do that is more difficult (e.g., longer) than Bright Angel. I'd start with the Transept Trail -- you... More

I can only answer your first question. Yes, there is a shuttle that transports hikers who travers the canyon back and forth between the North and South Rims. It runs several times a day.
