Don't let the name scare you away from this natural wonder, a dark cave with no electricity or modern conveniences but plenty of awesome sights including an 89-foot column, a dazzling Christmas tree-like column and a rimstone dam. Guided tours must be booked in advance.

We were pleasantly surprised with the unique formations in this cave. They are nothing like the formations you see in the big room, but they are just as beautiful, if not more so. There is a genuinely creepy formation and there are awe-inspiring formations. When...More

Every cavern in Carlsbad is special and a wonder, and Slaughter is no exception. However, I would rate it third after Lower Cavern and the Big Room (no way I was going to shimmy into Spider Cave!) The best parts of Slaughter for me were...More

Our elementary school daughter has already been in several caves in different cities...she enjoys the cave experience. And we, her parents, love it. We took this trip to New Mexico specifically to visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park. A day after going into the Natural Entrance...More

Slaughter Canyon Cave is a separate cave system from Carlsbad and can only be seen on guided, small-group tours. The cave is undeveloped except for some rudimentary steps at steep spots, so the only light you have is from the headlamps on the helmets that...More

This was the first time we have done a natural cave tour. Only light was from headlamps and this added to the excitement and mystery. It is a very strenuous hike up/back to the mouth of the cave and there are several slick spots inside....More

Slaughter Canyon is an old mining cave which is separate from the main cavern. The Rangers we had were excellent guides and good storytellers which really provided the highlight of the trip. Total time in the cave is about 1-1/2 hours as the rest of...More

I was only in the area for 2 days and was very lucky that this tour ran on one of them. I had to reserve a ticket online months prior to my trip as the group size is very limited. The tour started at 8.30am,...More

This was truly an "INCREDIBLE" guided tour. The best one in the park, "IF" you are looking to do something more spectacular than King's Palace, or Left Hand Tunnel. I have not done Lower Cave (although wanted to) because the timing didn't fit. See my...More

This cave is located about 25 minutes away from the official Carlsbad cavern. You meet your ranger, receive the necessary equipment (bring 3 double aa batteries) and then caravan to the parking lot below the cave. It is a 45 min hike up to the...More

Went in late spring, it was a very hard hike up with no shade. Inside cave and going back down were fine. I'm glad we did it. 14 yr old ran up the mountain, but it was harder on me than I expected. Bring several...More
