It is about 5 1/2 miles down with 16% grade at some places but to get down to the level of this beautiful river where some of the water is diverted into the tunnel is worth it.

While it is possible to hike to the river using extremely challenging, unmaintained trails, the East Portal Road is the only realistic route to the river for the vast majority of visitors to the park. The road, which is generally closed by snow from mid-November through Mid-April, starts just beyond the park’s entrance station, to the right, and descends steeply... More

The road can be a little wild if you are not use to Mountain roads. But the real prize is the fishing in the river, I think it is excellent fishing but the fish are shy, They get a lot of pressure so they can be picky. Picnic ares and restrooms are available down by the river.

Two days earlier before we flew out this road was closed. When we arrived, it had just opened that day! About 6.5 miles down with some twisting turns but a great spot at the bottom. It has the usual pit toilets at the bottom along with picnic tables right on the river. Not very crowded.

A nice shorter excursion in Grand Canyon of the Gunnison National Park down to the Gunnison River. It has twists and turns both ways so you need to use your lower gears to save wear and tear on the vehicle. Watch the NPS video in the visitors’ center before you go since they talk about an important tunnel irrigation project... More

It is a 16% grade and lots of curves but well worth the drive to the bottom. This wasn't here the last time we were here so had to do it and very glad we did

After traveling the North RIm, we came back around to the South Rim to do East Portal Road, ( and to get my passport stamp). This road leads to the river and is a great view looking up at the age old rocks. This view represents the character of the stones you were looking down on. The beavers and otters... More

A super steep (16% grade) 6 mile road leading down into the canyon. Terrific at the bottom. Amazing views along the drive, and then great views from the base. Water and surroundings are stunning. A campground is also available here.

We had half a day to spend in Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP and started our day doing the East Portal Road. If we had it to do over again we'd skip this drive in favor of spending more time "topside" on the canyon. The drive itself was fine but the views at the bottom were a bit disappointing.... More

We wanted a more up close and personal experience of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison national Park. This drive down got us closest to the river. We'd already done the south rim and this was just an additional 30 minutes down and back. Since you are already there, you should tech this onto your trip.
