I was honestly a little nervous coming down this road. My sister was fine lol. It's exciting and a little nerve wrecking but it is so worth it!!

Me and my two boys decided to go on a hike one day and we thought we would go somewhere close. I had never been. It was great. The views are great and we enjoyed nature and spending time with each other.

The road is a bit steep and twisty in places and not suited for large vehicles. However, the effort is worth it to get down to the Gunnison River and see it up close.

While it is possible to hike to the river using extremely challenging, unmaintained trails, the East Portal Road is the only realistic route to the river for the vast majority of visitors to the park. The road, which is generally closed by snow from mid-November...More
