Best to see at high tide
We made 2 stops at Thunder Hole, our first stop was at low tide. So, we went back the next day at high tide and it was worth the second trip. Not as high as some photos show, while we were there, but still pretty amazing to see.

    Beautiful views
We were able to find parking in the small parking lot across from the entrance to Thunder Hole. You can also park on the side of the road. It’s a pretty neat area. We went in the morning which is low tide. I imagine in the evening you get a better feel of the Thunder sound from the clashing waves.

Great time on Mount Desert Island, Maine
fantastic trip with perfect weather. Coming from over 30 days straight of 105+ temperatures it was a pleasure and relief to sleep with relatively cool nights and the bedroom windows open. We charted a fishing trip which was awesome as the grandkids caught over 50 fish (most were released but we did manage to keep about a dozen for a fish fry later in the week). Hiking was fantastic and we did a 20 mile bike ride with a lunch break half way through. Bar Harbour was a great little town to walk around with plenty of good restaurants to eat and drink at. Thunder Hole was a little disappointing due to the ocean being pretty calm but the hikes around that area were great. Highly recommended! Accommodations, food and groceries in general were on the pricing side but the trip was enjoyable overall and yes we will do it again.

Fun spot to stop at in Acadia
Fun spot to head to as high tide approaches. We did not hear the “thunder sound” the way it was described but understand that others haven’t heard it either. The kids had fun exploring the rocks and watching the water.

section of the rocky Acadia National Park
Thunder Hole is a section of the rocky Acadia National Park shoreline where the water crashes against the rocks spouting high in the air. OK, that's what I read/heard but again you have to time it to see/hear the sound. there were bus tours and it seemed the passengers were disappointed, but I did hear a bang sound. This is a beautiful stretch of coastline. when we went there- that tipping point- it was closed. Parking: There is a parking lot across the street.

    Worth visiting
We were there on a weekday morning and did hear a form of what sounded like thunder, although we can see how it would be stronger at high tide. Glad we saw and heard it; there were several people there when we arrived and when we left, but not extremely busy. Afterward we started up the Otter Path.

    We loved it
The swooshing of the water rushing in and the thunderous noise made for a lot of fun for our entire family. Even a few splashes from time to time upon us. Geologic formations combined with water are very fun for me. The youngsters seemed to be having a fabulous time as well.

Nice Time in Bar Harbor Area
Enjoyed the scenery and the lobster! Took some nice tours - bus tour of Acadia, culinary walking tour, LuLu lobster boat, and Acadia carriages in Acadia Park. Enjoyed them all and would recommend them. Only drawback is how crowded this part of Maine is.

    A must-do experience
The small parking lot will probably be filled as this is a must-do when at Acadia Natl Park. The trail down leads to a rocky outcrop where the ocean has carved a roughly 8 foot wide passage into a sub-surface cave. When the water hits the back of the cave the resulting noise sounds like thunder or cannon fire. May take several minutes to hear as volume and frequency varies on tidal conditions. Would go again.

The water makes a loud sound as it gashes through the cracks between the huge rocks. Fascinating natural phenomenon that you can observe safely at a very close range. You may get a little wet though…

Check out the Thunder Hole area in Acadia and listen to the sights and sounds of this thunder noise that comes with the waves crashing into this cove. Lots of spectators, so you need to be patient.
