The protected area of Skand which is one of the primary peak of Hajhir mountain which is about 1500 M in the sea level.
Skand is a spectacular range of sharp peaks rising in the center of Socotra Island. The scenery is dramatic, and the upper elevations were lush and green given.

Great hike up these mountains, through a natural wonderland of Dragon's Blood (aromatic resin) trees, frankincense and isolation.

The Hajhir Mountains are a spectacular range of sharp peaks rising in the center of Socotra Island. The scenery is dramatic, and the upper elevations were lush and green given recent rains when I visited (this is not always the case). Spending a few days and wending through these mountains is a wonderful experience to see the dramatic peaks, the dragon blood, bottle, and cucumber trees, and to meet with locals living there.

There is a fee for going to the area with a guide. To view the peaks from the coast would be free but you would miss so much.

Scand Peak is by no means one of the highlights of Socotra. But as an experience, it was a fiasco in our case, largely because of poor organization of trekking.

Our guide from Socotra Eco Tours have severely underestimated the difficulty level of this activity, having wrongly suggested it was easily doable for my travel buddy with long-term back problems (of which we warned in advance). Turned out it was not.

So if you consider trekking to Skand, estimate your fitness level realistically. Those well fit or experienced in trekking will not find this too hard. But if you have any mobility problems, better give it up.

Another problem was the local guide – one of those to be hired mandatory to show the way. I’m all for giving the locals a chance to earn. But in turn I’d appreciate at least tiny bit of attention to the travellers’ needs. The guide didn’t care about choosing the easiest tracks, so eventually I had to decide on the paths myself instead of just following the step and enjoying the views. But worst of all, he was literally running forward despite my repeated requests to slow it down and give me a chance to take some photos.

Such a race up and down the mountains could have been perfect for those willing to lose weight. But it didn’t answer the purpose of an enthusiastic photographer and was not too easy to make at that speed with full photo-gear load.

I failed to find much information about the area in advance. And have mistakenly expected we were supposed to trek for a while to finally get to a scenic plateau with Dragon Blood trees and other unique floral species, where I could do the photo-shooting.

Wrong! It was precisely what we trekked (or rather raced) through that all experience was about. So if you decide on making it to Scand, grab every chance to stop and take photos.

Whatever it took, the most scenic valleys, canyons and mountains, richly covered with amazing endemic greenery (first of all, quirky Dragon Blood trees in abundance) and offering truly breathtaking views, especially from the top of the peak, were by no means worthy the trouble.
