- Jamie OFresno, California312 contributionsHeavy, Incredibly Humbling ExperienceA heavy and remarkably humbling experience. This self-guided tour (using headphones with prerecorded commentary) walked us through the entirety of the plantation, structure by structure, and allowed us to go at our own pace - which I found to be very important as parts did become quite emotional. We got to empathize and appreciate some of the history, stories, and encounters of enslaved people. Also got to admire their skills and achievements. Would highly recommend for anyone visiting Louisiana.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 January 2023
- Lori B2 contributionsCreole culture and architectureLogan, our tour guide, did an awesome job. It was clear that he studied the history of the plantation and shared his personal cultural connection to the area. I learned quite a bit about creole culture and history. A wealth of information - totally satisfied.Visited February 2023Written 26 February 2023
- Jodie6432 contributionsVery good overview of the life of the enslaved on a sugar cane plantationWe came to Whitney immediately following our tour of another nearby plantation. At the first tour the focus was mostly on the “Big House” with a brief bit about the lives of the enslaved. Whitney was the exact opposite of that: a brief bit of the main house with almost the total focus on the lives of the enslaved. Kristyn, our guide, was very knowledgeable, spoke clearly and with a volume that was easy to hear. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 March 2023
- Adam FHouston, Texas14 contributionsThe story must be toldWe did the audio tour and it was informative, well-presented and mesmerizing. This is such an important story for all Americans to hear. In a time where many in the country are attempting to erase history, I’m so thankful for the Whitney Plantation continuing to tell the story in such a profound way.Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 March 2023
- Joebob747Neenah, Wisconsin358 contributionsA must see. This place advertises as the only plantation in Louisiana to be exclusively dedicated to the history of the enslaved people, and I can't speak to the "only" part, but they definitely lived up to the history of the enslaved people part. We did the self guided tour which took about 90 minutes or so. This was an entirely different experience than any other plantation we've been to. There was almost no mention of the property owners. Only the basement floor of the house was open. The rest of the walking tour included the slave cabins, sugar cane information, a small chapel, etc. It was really impactful to see a wall with approx 125,000 slave names on it, just from Louisiana. We stopped here as part of the Gray line tour, otherwise I would have probably chose the guided tour.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 April 2023

- MGTCWabasha, Minnesota1 contributionA humbling experienceWhat a humbling and impactful experience! We learned so much and can only hope that others who visit will take to heart that we must do better and be better...And that no human being has the right or ability to control the lives of others. Being human is an obligation - not simply what we are. Congratulations to Whitney for the work you are doing. Please continue your incredible mission and messaging!Visited April 2023Written 18 April 2023

- Karen F2 contributionsDon't Miss this Tour!My friends and I decided to do the guided tour of Whitney Plantation. I'm sorry I don't remember our guide's name but she was fantastic! It was hot but she did her best to keep us in the shade. She didn't hold back on the history of enslavement at the Whitney either. It's still shocking to learn hour humans were treated! I would definitely recommend slipping away from New Orleans for an afternoon to take the guided tour. Thank You!Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 19 July 2023
- Julie PoseyCleveland, Tennessee1 contributionA must seeHonestly everyone should visit this plantation. I would strongly recommend the self guided tour because you need the time to truly understand and contemplate what being enslaved . It was shocking to realize that this plantation operated until 1975. It’s not the story of privilege and the romance of Gone with the Wind. It’s the reality we need to understand . To understand the faults of our past is to ensure a true American future.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 July 2023

Perhaps the best thing we did during our stay of several days in the New Orleans area. Presents plantation life from the perspective of the enslaved people. Visiting this site, will make you ( especially while people) think more seriously about the experience and legacy of slavery. Well done in an attractive, historic setting. You spend most of the time outside. Do not go on a too hot day! About an hour drive from the French Quarter. Near the Laura Plantation. The self- guided audio tour allows you to proceed at the pace you choose. Highly recommend!

Whitney Plantation denotes itself as the only antebellum slave-run plantation that focuses solely on the slave experience. We took the self-guided audio tour ( included with admission) & found the walk well laid-out & the guide informative. There was beautiful sculpture strode all around. Beautiful place with a sad history

The experience of seeing the living conditions and brutality inflicted on the enslaved was powerful, moving, and searing. The whole story will never be known, but the Whitney Plantation performs a truly reliable retelling of the horrific slave existence. Anyone who claims that slavery was beneficial to the enslaved tells a damnable lie! The truth must be told in all of its ugliness and starkness. There is no way to minimize the degradation of human beings who lived and died under these abominable circumstances. Everyone should visit the Whitney and get a firsthand experience. Thank you! Lest we forget!

As a museum of slavery, the Whitney does what has not been dared before. It invites visitors into the physical place of a plantation, but more importantly into the stories that unfolded there. These stories of real, named, enslaved persons are related with love, sorrow, grace and an unflinching commitment to truth--each one in the right measure. Every single American should see this museum. I mean it: every one of us. Notably, it's not an experience of "take your medicine, learn some things you didn't want to know, and then feel bad." It's simply an opportunity to learn, in a unique way, about events that happened. These events have had earth-shattering reverberations for our country. These events are rarely discussed elsewhere or with this attention to the realities of individual lives swept up in them. My opinion: no institution in the country surpasses the scope and significance of the Whitney for understanding America's racial history or the contemporary complexities of race in our own time.
Practical details: We did not take one of the many (pricey) guided tours originating in New Orleans. We drove ourselves on the trip of 40 minutes each way. This allowed us to pay only the museum's admission price, but still provided us with an excellent tour guide--a college student who could link historic information to her own, ongoing studies in Criminal Justice. She was skillful, knowledgeable, charming, and engaging. I was glad to have read the chapter on the Whitney Plantation in Clint Smith's How the Word is Passed in advance of my visit and Sue Monk Kidd's The Invention of Wings after my visit.

First, pay no attention to the pricing listed on TripAdvisor. I bought two tickets direct on the Whitney Plantation web site for under $50.
This was an interesting and intense experience. We took a self-guided audio tour. The commentary was interesting and informative. The facilities were excellent. The exhibits and the artworks were moving and profound. Less than an hour from New Orleans. Don't miss this.

Absolutely AMAZING! I have visited many plantations, the focus is usually on the house and history of the slave owner. At the Whitney Plantation, the focus is the history of the enslaved, including recorded first hand accounts. A true must visit.

I can’t put into words how impressed we were with all of the compiled information about slavery. Never in my 50+ years of life, had me and my husband seen so much data and displays of life as a slave on a plantations, put together so well. THANK YOU! We can’t wait to return to New Orleans with our children and bring them here. Every school in New Orleans should take a field trip here.
My only suggestion is better signage in the area where the Field of Angels is located. We almost missed everything in this area because there wasn’t great signage that led people to this area. I was moved to tears in this section.

I'll break the review into parts to organize my thoughts:
Logistics - You will need to rent a car to get here since finding transportation back is near impossible. It is a very easy and relaxing drive from New Orleans. You should have no network issues and so GPS will work fine.
We purchased the 'Self Guided Audio Tour' which gives you a time that you need to get there. But they are flexible and ok if you run early or late.
Self Guided Audio Tour - Highly recommend this. The plantation has numbered markers to help you know which direction you should walk in. It is very simple to use, and although they provide one, you can bring your own wired headphones if you like. The audio commentary was clear, informative and moving. It included testimonies from survivors.
The Plantation/Space - Although vast, it is not easy to walk though it. We were walking on a hot day and appreciated the fact that they had water sprinklers to walk under and cool off. There are a number of benches and areas to sit and reflect. The structures and installations there were all incredibly maintained and helped us understand the deplorable conditions and degree of atrocities that were committed.

I chose, of so many plantations in the New Orleans area, to go see the Whitney Plantation because of the online presentation of what was there. It appealed to me, for it revealed an emotional element as it presented the history. It was easy to get to and roads are good. Plenty of parking. The staff is very knowledgeable about not only the plantation and its history, but also about the selection of literature available in their store as well as about various things in that general area which are not related to the Whitney. Extremely helpful and friendly staff, but not to the point of constantly checking on you to see if you have questions. They allow you your own thought space to absorb what is to be seen and to feel the emotional side of such a spirit-crushing existence. Life-size statuary of children, for me, absolutely ushered a deeper sense of inhumanity and sorrow. So much effort has been made to fully, objectively, matter-of-factly represent how life was for all persons, White or Black, young and aged. Painstaking efforts have been taken to recover data of all adults and children held in bondage and led to memorialized records in marble, accounting for dates, ages, names, places of origins. Though the story of slavery at Whitney Plantation was one of Blacks enslaved by Whites. Whites, per se, are not solely villainized for such practices. The institution of slavery, as they account for in general, has been practiced by many races/cultures throughout history and in all regions on Earth, a balanced and truthful presentation.
I did the self-guided tour with the headphone narration. The narration was done well; I enjoyed it and had full control of play and pause, moving back and forth to re-hear parts. It took me about one hour, and that worked nicely for me. I had a time constraint, yet I did not have to rush. The one hour that it took me did not slight me on "feeling" what life must have been like, nor did I miss any exhibits.
I cannot imagine one not thoroughly enveloped and interest peaked by the setting and story. A visit to Whitney was profoundly affecting in me.

Is it better to drive yourself or take a tour bus to Whitney Plantation?

Drive yourself, though it is a bit tricky to find it when you're close, but not too difficult, and it's not very far from Baton Rouge.

Hello, a somewhat embarrassing question that I must unfortunately ask: I seem to have lost the confirmation email for our upcoming visit to the plantation. Are physical copies of the tickets required? Or is it that they can look up proof of purchase by name or purchasing information?

You don’t actually get physical copies of the tickets. The confirmation email was all that I received. However I didn’t even need that. They look up your reservation by last name so you should be all set.
I am trying to decide between the Oak Alley Plantation tour and the Whitney Plantation tour. I want history and don't want things to be glossed over like I read in some of the Oak Alley reviews. Has anyone been to both, any suggestions?

I went to both, a single day apart, and I'd say the Whitney changed me forever, and I've already forgotten Oak Alley. Oak Alley tells you what you already know, whereas the Whitney opens your eyes to whole other parts of history that you'll be wondering why you've not heard before. Some of the exhibits there are permanently in my mind and I still get chills thinking about them. The Whitney was top-notch and truly educational; I recommend it a great deal more than Oak Alley.

No. Take your time when you go. There is so much to see, if your short on time, it won't be as fulfilling.

Bonjour,
Bonne visite!

We have reservations for 11.30. According to the reviews, many people end up staying on the grounds after doing the tour. We are tight on time in the afternoon but are free in the morning BEFORE our scheduled tour. Are we going to be able to enter the grounds before our tour starts or are we only abke to wander around AFTER the tour? Thank you.

I was not able to go onto the grounds before our exhibit. I was told to stay in the exhibit area. I spend about 30 minutes in the slavery exhibit. I was told that I could stay on the grounds after the tour. You may want to call to confirm.
